Taxonomy & naming
Anatolichthys danfordii was described by the Belgian-British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1890, based on material collected in central Anatolia — a region explored at the time by the naturalist C. G. Danford, after whom the species is named. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) lists the valid combination as Anatolichthys danfordii (Boulenger, 1890); the parenthetical authority indicates the name has been moved from its original generic placement since description.
The species belongs to the family Aphaniidae, segregated from the broader killifish assemblage on molecular and morphological grounds. Within Aphaniidae, the genus Aphanius groups the Mediterranean and south-west Asian spring and salt-lake toothcarps — small, sexually dichromatic fishes strongly tied to isolated hard-water or saline habitats. Anatolichthys danfordii is sometimes listed under the junior synonym Anatolichthys danfordii, a name applied when the central Anatolian Aphanius were briefly treated as a separate genus, but this arrangement is not followed by Catalog of Fishes. No subspecies are currently recognised.

Morphology
Anatolichthys danfordii is a dwarf killifish, reaching a maximum recorded total length of 2 in (FishBase), with most adults in the 1.6–2 in range. The body plan is the characteristic Aphanius form: stocky, laterally compressed, with a blunt head, a terminal or slightly upturned mouth well suited for surface-film feeding, and rounded fins. The caudal fin is rounded rather than pointed.
Sexual dichromatism is pronounced, as in all Aphanius. Males display a silvery-blue to blue-grey ground colour overlaid with narrow pale transverse bars or spots — the precise pattern varies with light and mood. The intensity of the barring and iridescent sheen increases during courtship. Females are cryptic: olive-brown to pale tan, with spotted or mottled flanks providing camouflage against the sandy and silty substrate of their marsh habitats. Females are also visibly deeper-bodied when gravid, which is most of the breeding season. The fins of males may carry a marginal dark or yellowish border.
Habitat
The species is confined to the Kızılırmak river system and the Sultan Sazlığı (Sultan Reedy) wetland complex in Kayseri Province, central Turkey. Sultan Sazlığı is a Ramsar-listed wetland and national park, yet the habitat accessible to the fish — shallow spring-fed channels, marsh margins, and backwaters with emergent and submerged vegetation — is under pressure from water abstraction and agricultural encroachment.
Anatolichthys danfordii tolerates the hard, alkaline, and often somewhat saline water that characterises the springs and mineral-rich inflows of the central Anatolian plateau. The fish occupies densely vegetated shallows with sand and silt substrates; Fishipedia records a temperature tolerance of roughly 50–77 °F and a pH of approximately 6.5–7.5 (water moderately hard, GH 8–10 dH), though field conditions in the Kızılırmak system tend toward the higher end of both ranges. It occupies a mid-depth to near-surface position in the water column and is found most commonly where aquatic macrophytes, roots, and decaying marginal plant matter provide both spawning substrate and invertebrate prey.
Feeding
Like all Aphanius, Anatolichthys danfordii is a carnivore that relies primarily on invertebrate prey. In its natural habitat the diet consists of small aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates taken at and near the water surface or among vegetation — mosquito larvae, chironomid midges, microcrustaceans, and other small arthropods form the bulk of the diet. The upturned, terminal mouth is well adapted for picking items from the surface film, a feeding posture common to the genus.
In the aquarium the species accepts a wide range of small live and frozen foods: Artemia nauplii and adults, Daphnia, chironomid larvae (bloodworm), and small tubifex. Dried foods are taken if suitably small, but the diet should emphasise live and frozen invertebrate items for long-term health and to stimulate natural breeding behaviour. Overfeeding with rich foods in warm water should be avoided, as the species is best kept in cooler conditions that approximate its native springs.
Mating
Anatolichthys danfordii is a non-annual, plant-spawning killifish. It does not bury eggs in substrate and has no diapause phase; instead, pairs or small groups deposit small batches of adhesive eggs directly onto fine-leaved aquatic plants, roots, and fibrous substrate near the water surface or across a range of depths, and the eggs incubate in water. Yoğurtçuoğlu and Ekmekçi (2013) documented that females deposit 4–6 adhesive eggs per spawning act, with reproduction occurring continuously in permanent water rather than being restricted to a defined wet season.
Male courtship follows the typical Aphanius pattern: the male displays laterally to the female, erecting fins and intensifying his barring pattern, then manoeuvres alongside her to press against vegetation or other fine substrate where egg deposition occurs. The mating system in the wild has been described as dominance-based polygamous, with dominant males monopolising access to multiple females. Spawning can occur repeatedly at intervals throughout the warm months.
Breeding
Eggs are adhesive, attached in small clusters to plant leaves, spawning mops, or root bundles; they are relatively small and transparent. Incubation takes approximately 10–14 days at typical temperatures (around 68 °F), and newly hatched fry are immediately free-swimming, though very small. There is no parental care; adults do not guard the eggs and will consume them if left together, so either the eggs should be removed to a separate hatching vessel or the spawning mop transferred away from the adults.
In the aquarium, conditioning the fish on varied live foods and providing a slight drop in temperature (dropping to 59–64 °F in winter, then allowing a gradual rise to 68–72 °F in spring) helps synchronise a breeding response analogous to the seasonal cues in their native Anatolian habitat. Spawning mops of dark wool or Java moss provide suitable substrate. Fry accept infusoria and commercial fry powder as first foods, graduating to Artemia nauplii within a week or two. The species is comparatively straightforward to breed among the Aphanius, though populations in the hobby are very small and maintaining genetic diversity requires coordination among the few keepers who hold it.
In the aquarium
Anatolichthys danfordii is a specialist fish — it appears only rarely in the hobby and is maintained primarily by killifish societies and dedicated keepers rather than the mainstream aquarium trade. A small aquarium of 11–16 US gal is sufficient for a pair or small group, provided it is well-planted and covered (the fish can jump). Water should be hard and alkaline — a pH of 6.5–7.5 and moderate to hard general hardness are appropriate; a small amount of salt (1–2 g/litre) is tolerated and may benefit the fish, reflecting the slightly saline character of some of its native springs. Temperature should be kept on the cooler side — 64–72 °F is ideal for long-term health, with a seasonal drop in winter if breeding is desired.
The species is generally peaceful and can be kept in single-sex or mixed groups. Males may spar with each other but serious injury is uncommon in a planted aquarium with adequate space. Tankmates, if any, should be similar in size and temperament and able to tolerate the same cool, hard-water conditions. Owing to the extreme rarity of the species in the wild, acquiring fish should ideally be through killifish society networks that maintain documented strains from known sources, rather than wild-caught material.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Anatolichthys danfordii as Critically Endangered (CR) in 2013 under criteria B1ab(i,ii,iii,v)+2ab(i,ii,iii,v), reflecting an extremely small and fragmented extent of occurrence, a continuing decline in the area, extent, and quality of its habitat, and a correspondingly small population size. The species exists within a single river catchment — the Kızılırmak — and its wetland complex, Sultan Sazlığı, which, despite Ramsar designation and national park status, faces ongoing pressures from agricultural water abstraction, drainage, and conversion of marginal wetland to farmland.
Yoğurtçuoğlu and Ekmekçi (2013) documented the first formal conservation attempt for the species, establishing that captive rearing for potential reintroduction is feasible, though no large-scale safety-net population exists. The introduced Gambusia (mosquitofish), present in many Turkish water bodies, represents an additional threat to native toothcarps through direct predation on eggs and fry and competition for invertebrate prey. Anatolichthys danfordii sits within a wider pattern of crisis across the genus: many Aphanius species are narrow endemics of single spring systems in the arid belt, and several have already been lost or reduced to vestigial populations as springs are pumped dry or diverted for agriculture. Conservation of the species depends on protecting the hydrology of the Kızılırmak headwater springs and the Sultan Sazlığı basin, combined with coordinated captive maintenance by killifish specialists.
