Taxonomy & naming
Cynodonichthys birkhahni was first described by J.J. Hoedeman in 1954, with the type locality recorded as a small side stream near Yavisa in the Darién province of eastern Panama. The parentheses around the authority indicate the species has been moved from its original genus since description. For many decades it was placed in Rivulus, a broad catch-all genus for Neotropical rivulines, and subsequently in Cynodonichthys, the name still used by some databases including FishBase. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) and the 2003 rivuline checklist by Wilson J.E.M. Costa recognise the current valid combination as Cynodonichthys birkhahni (Hoedeman, 1954), placing it in the genus Anablepsoides within the family Rivulidae.
The genus Anablepsoides was reinstated to accommodate a coherent group of non-annual rivulines distributed across northern South America and Central America. The name alludes to superficial similarities in eye structure to Anableps, the four-eyed fish. Within the genus, C. birkhahni is one of the northernmost representatives, with Panama marking the boundary of the genus's Central American range. The EtyFish database on Cyprinodontiformes confirms the type locality at Yavisa and supports the genus-level placement.
The specific epithet birkhahni honours Holger Birkhahn, a German aquarist recognised for extensive collecting work in Panama including the expedition that yielded the type series. The species appears infrequently in the aquarium literature because of its restricted range and the logistical difficulty of obtaining material from the Darién.
This fish was long listed as Anablepsoides birkhahni; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes places the species in Cynodonichthys, and the current combination Cynodonichthys birkhahni is followed here.
Morphology
Cynodonichthys birkhahni is a slender, cylindrical killifish reaching a maximum recorded total length of 2.4 in, based on the FishBase record for males. Like most rivulines, the body is elongate and subcylindrical, tapering toward a rounded caudal fin. The mouth is superior to slightly terminal, positioned for surface or mid-water feeding. Scales are cycloid and moderately large relative to body size, typical of the genus.
Colouration in males follows the rivuline pattern of lateral spotting or banding on a brownish to olive-green base, with the caudal fin commonly marked with spots or a bordered pattern. Females and juveniles are typically plainer, with a translucent or pale olive body and less-developed fin pigmentation. As with all Anablepsoides, males are more brightly marked and develop the lateral display colours used in courtship; females are stouter-bodied when gravid. Detailed published colour descriptions for this species specifically are sparse in the accessible literature, reflecting how rarely it has been collected and observed alive.
Habitat
Cynodonichthys birkhahni is known from small forest streams and side channels in the Darién region of eastern Panama, with the type locality at a side stream near Yavisa — a lowland area characterised by tropical moist forest, sluggish clearwater and blackwater tributary channels, and seasonally variable but never fully desiccating water bodies. The species occupies benthopelagic niches in freshwater tropical habitats, favouring shallow, shaded stream margins with leaf litter, overhanging vegetation, and submerged root systems that provide cover and egg-deposition sites.
As a non-annual rivuline, C. birkhahni is associated with permanent or near-permanent water — unlike the annual killifish of seasonally flooded savannas, it does not depend on temporary pools that dry completely. Captive breeding data for closely related Anablepsoides species from similar habitats document soft, near-neutral water: a study of A. ornatus from the Pastaza River basin recorded temperatures of approximately 74 °F and pH 7.3 with very low dissolved solids (TDS below 25 ppm). Genus-wide, water chemistry preferences span soft and slightly acidic to near-neutral conditions, consistent with the soft forest streams of the Darién lowlands.
The Darién's lowland rainforest is one of Central America's least-disturbed but most threatened ecosystems. The small streams that C. birkhahni inhabits lie within a corridor facing increasing pressure from road construction, colonisation, and deforestation, all of which degrade the shaded, leaf-litter stream habitats that rivulines depend on.
Feeding
Like other members of the genus, Cynodonichthys birkhahni is likely a generalised micro-predator, taking small invertebrates — chironomid larvae, microcrustaceans, mosquito larvae, small worms, and surface-fallen insects — that are available in the forest stream margins it inhabits. FishBase classifies it as a benthopelagic species, consistent with feeding activity that spans the water column and surface film.
In captivity, non-annual Anablepsoides species accept a wide range of small live and frozen foods including daphnia, cyclops, artemia nauplii and adults, bloodworm, and tubifex. Finely crushed prepared foods are taken by well-conditioned individuals, though like most killifish they do best when live or frozen invertebrates form the bulk of the diet. The small gape (consistent with 2.4 in maximum length) limits prey size, and competition from larger tankmates for food can reduce condition in this species.
Mating
Cynodonichthys birkhahni is a non-annual killifish, and its reproductive behaviour reflects the plant-spawning strategy characteristic of rivulines from permanent water habitats. Males court females with lateral displays, erecting the dorsal and caudal fins to show colour pattern. Courtship in Anablepsoides is iterative rather than explosive: pairs spawn repeatedly over days to weeks, depositing small numbers of eggs at each spawning act rather than in a single mass release.
Eggs are adhesive and are attached individually or in small clumps to fine-leaved aquatic plants, floating roots, Java moss, or artificial spawning mops positioned near the water surface or among submerged structure. Observations of closely related species document 5–8 eggs per day deposited in clumps on Java moss, with spawning activity continuing across extended periods when water conditions are stable. Incubation occurs in water with no diapause requirement — the eggs do not need to be transferred to damp peat or allowed to dry, which distinguishes non-annual rivulines sharply from annual killifish of the same family.
Male aggression toward females after spawning can be a concern in confined aquaria; providing visual barriers and separating the pair between spawning sessions is advisable. Females may also be harassed to exhaustion if kept with multiple males.
Breeding
Breeding C. birkhahni in captivity follows the standard non-annual rivuline protocol. A small, well-planted or mop-equipped aquarium with gentle filtration and a stable temperature in the range of approximately 72–77 °F is appropriate, based on conditions documented for congeners from comparable forest-stream habitats. Water should be soft and slightly acidic to near-neutral (pH approximately 6.5–7.5), with low conductivity reflecting the soft forest streams of the Darién.
Spawning mops — acrylic yarn tied into dense bundles and anchored near the surface or allowed to float — are the standard egg-collection method for non-annual rivulines in the hobbyist setting. Eggs can be collected by picking them individually from the mop or by removing the mop entirely and replacing it, then incubating the eggs in shallow water with a small amount of antifungal agent (such as dilute methylene blue) to reduce fungal loss. At 73–75 °F, incubation takes approximately 12–18 days for most non-annual Anablepsoides.
Fry are relatively large at hatching compared to annual killifish and accept newly hatched artemia nauplii almost immediately. Small daphnia and micro-worms round out the early diet. Adults should be separated from the egg-collection vessel, as they will consume eggs and fry. Growth is moderate and the fish reach sexual maturity in several months. Longevity is greater than in annual killifish — non-annuals commonly live two to three years or more under good aquarium conditions.
In the aquarium
Cynodonichthys birkhahni is described by FishBase as difficult to maintain in the aquarium — a rating reflecting the combination of its rarity in the hobby, its narrow wild origin in a restricted and poorly collected locality, and the sensitivity of small rivulines to water quality fluctuations. It is not a fish for beginners or for community setups with active or boisterous tankmates.
A dedicated species aquarium of 8–16 US gal per pair or trio is appropriate. Dense vegetation or Java moss, subdued lighting, leaf litter on the substrate to replicate the forest-stream environment, and a tight-fitting lid are all important — killifish are agile jumpers and escape readily through any gap. Filtration should be gentle (a sponge filter is ideal) to avoid strong currents that stress small rivulines. Partial water changes with soft, slightly acidic conditioned water maintain the chemistry the species requires.
In common with most killifish, C. birkhahni rewards patient, attentive husbandry with interesting behaviour: active courtship displays, territorial interactions between males, and the steady output of eggs from a productive pair. The species is rarely available in the mainstream hobby; dedicated killifish societies and exchanges — such as those affiliated with the American Killifish Association or European killifish organisations — are the most realistic sources for captive-bred stock.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Cynodonichthys birkhahni as Endangered (EN) under criterion B1ab(iii) in December 2019, with the assessment conducted by Jonathan W. Armbruster (Auburn University) and Tim Lyons (Albuquerque Biopark). The Endangered status reflects the species' extremely limited known range — a handful of small streams in the Darién region of eastern Panama — and the ongoing decline in the extent and quality of its forest-stream habitat.
The Darién lowlands, while historically among the least-developed areas of Central America due to geographic isolation, face intensifying deforestation pressure tied to agricultural expansion, colonisation following road construction, and cattle ranching. The small, shaded streams that C. birkhahni depends on are highly sensitive to canopy removal: sedimentation increases, water temperature rises, and the leaf-litter and root structure that provides food and spawning substrate is lost. There are no recorded occurrences of this species from protected areas that would buffer it against these pressures.
No specific conservation actions targeting C. birkhahni are known to be underway. Its survival in captivity depends entirely on informal exchange networks within the killifish hobby, which provide a minimal insurance population but are not a substitute for in-situ habitat protection. Given the narrow range, the ongoing habitat loss trajectory in the Darién, and the absence of any large protected stream network within the known distribution, the species remains at genuine extinction risk unless land-use pressures in its watershed are reduced.
