Taxonomy & naming
Cynodonichthys kuelpmanni was described by H. O. Berkenkamp and V. Etzel in 1986, based on specimens from Atlantic Panama. The species was originally assigned to the large, polyphyletic genus Rivulus as then broadly circumscribed, and appears in older literature under the combination Rivulus kuelpmanni. Subsequent molecular and morphological revisions of New World rivulines split out a cluster of South American and Central American species into Anablepsoides — a genus resurrected from Costa's 2004 revision — bringing kuelpmanni to its current valid name under Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong). Older web resources and the American Killifish Association listing still use Rivulus kuelpmanni; FishBase additionally records the synonym Cynodonichthys kuelpmanni, reflecting an intermediate generic assignment.
The species belongs to the family Rivulidae, the South and Central American rivulines, within the order Cyprinodontiformes. Anablepsoides is a diverse rivuline genus spanning the Amazon basin, the Guianas, and Central America; kuelpmanni represents one of the genus's northern outliers in the Panamanian highlands.
This fish was long listed as Anablepsoides kuelpmanni; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes places the species in Cynodonichthys, and the current combination Cynodonichthys kuelpmanni is followed here.
Morphology
Cynodonichthys kuelpmanni is a slender, laterally compressed killifish reaching approximately 2.4 in total length (FishBase; It Rains Fishes). Like most rivulines it is dorsoventrally flattened through the head, an adaptation for surface-skimming and dwelling in shallow, leaf-litter-strewn streams. The dorsal fin is set well back toward the caudal peduncle, a characteristic rivuline body plan.
Published colour descriptions for this species are sparse in the available literature. As with other Anablepsoides from the Central American highlands, males would be expected to display more intense colouration than females — typical of the genus — but detailed colouration accounts specific to kuelpmanni are not captured in the available sources. Females are generally plainer and become visibly fuller in the abdomen when gravid.
Habitat
The type locality is recorded as the foot of the Cordillera Central, approximately 12 mi from Punta Peña, Bocas del Toro province, on the Caribbean (Atlantic) slope of Panama, at around 200 metres above sea level (Killifische Info). The species occupies freshwater streams and small rivers in this highland forest zone — clear to moderately tannin-stained water running over leaf litter and rock in shaded forest habitats.
The Atlantic slope of Bocas del Toro receives high rainfall year-round and supports dense tropical forest. Streams at this elevation tend to be soft, slightly acidic, and well-oxygenated compared to lowland Amazonian blackwaters — conditions that are reflected in the species' aquarium requirements. The range is believed to be extremely limited, consistent with the endemism pattern common among highland Central American killies where watersheds are small and fish populations highly isolated.
Feeding
Cynodonichthys kuelpmanni is insectivorous in the wild (American Killifish Association), as expected for a surface-oriented rivuline inhabiting forested highland streams where terrestrial and aquatic invertebrates are the principal prey. The upturned mouth and dorsally flattened head are adapted for taking surface-drifting insects, small arthropods, and aquatic invertebrates.
In captivity the species accepts a range of small live and frozen invertebrate foods: drosophila, small crickets, mosquito larvae, micro-worms, and frozen bloodworm. Small, frequent feedings suit its body size and natural foraging style. Care should be taken not to overfeed, as water quality degradation in a small species tank can proceed quickly.
Mating
Cynodonichthys kuelpmanni is a non-annual killifish — it inhabits permanent or near-permanent streams and does not employ the diapause strategy of annual species. Reproduction is continuous rather than tied to a single rainy-season cycle. The species is a plant-spawner: pairs court briefly near fine-leaved vegetation or floating mops, and the female deposits small numbers of adhesive eggs — typically 5 to 15 per spawning bout — which adhere to the substrate and incubate in water without entering diapause (It Rains Fishes).
Eggs are amber-coloured. Males display actively to females and, where multiple fish are kept together, hierarchies form among males. A well-conditioned pair will spawn repeatedly across many days, making a continuous slow accumulation of fry the typical production pattern rather than a single large clutch.
Breeding
Eggs are deposited daily on fine-leaved plants, Java moss, spawning mops, or roots and incubate fully submerged in water — there is no peat burial or dry incubation phase. It Rains Fishes records an incubation period consistent with other non-annual rivulines in warm water. A slightly lower pH is recommended for hatching, helping to inhibit fungal growth on the amber-coloured eggs. Infertile eggs should be removed promptly.
Fry are small at hatching and require appropriately scaled first foods. Artemia nauplii (baby brine shrimp) are recorded as suitable first foods (It Rains Fishes). Growth is relatively slow compared with annual species. The adults will consume eggs and small fry if given the opportunity, so separating eggs or fry to a rearing container is standard practice. Given the species' Critically Endangered status and extremely restricted wild population, maintaining a healthy captive population with careful breeding records has genuine conservation significance.
In the aquarium
FishBase characterises Cynodonichthys kuelpmanni as difficult to maintain in the aquarium — a rating reflecting both its sensitivity and the rarity of available captive stock. It is a specialist species suited to experienced killifish keepers rather than community aquariums. The It Rains Fishes account emphasises that it is a jumper: a tight-fitting lid is non-negotiable, as for all rivulines.
A small, well-planted or mop-furnished species tank of 8–16 US gal suits a pair or small group. Soft, slightly acidic water matching the Atlantic Panamanian highland profile is preferred — temperatures in the mid-tropical range (72–79 °F) with pH on the acidic side are appropriate. Gentle filtration that avoids strong surface turbulence suits the surface-foraging lifestyle. Given the extreme rarity of the species in nature, keepers should document their stock's provenance carefully and connect with the killifish community (American Killifish Association and affiliated studbook programmes) to coordinate captive management.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Cynodonichthys kuelpmanni as Critically Endangered (CR) in 2019, reflecting its extremely restricted range — limited to a single known locality area around Punta Peña in Bocas del Toro, Atlantic Panama — and the ongoing loss and degradation of the montane forest habitat on which it depends. The iNaturalist records show zero wild observations to date, underscoring how little survey effort has been directed at the species and how rarely it is encountered.
The Caribbean slope forests of Bocas del Toro face pressure from agricultural expansion, subsistence farming, and infrastructure development. Highland freshwater fish at 656 ft elevation in a small watershed have no refuge beyond the immediate stream system; any significant hydrological modification, deforestation of riparian zones, or introduction of alien fish (mosquitofish and tilapia are the most widespread threats to Central American highland killies) would be catastrophic for a population of this size. The species has been maintained in captivity by European killifish hobbyists, and its continued presence in specialist collections represents the most realistic insurance against extinction while formal conservation measures for Atlantic Panamanian highland streams remain inadequate.
