Taxonomy & naming
Foerschichthys flavipinnis was originally described in 1932 by the German aquarist and ichthyologist Hans Meinken as Aplocheilichthys flavipinnis, placing it among the lampeyes then grouped in the large genus Aplocheilichthys. It was later recognised as sufficiently distinct to warrant its own monotypic genus, Foerschichthys, named in honour of Rainer Foersch, a researcher associated with West African killifish systematics. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes lists the valid combination as Foerschichthys flavipinnis (Meinken, 1932), within the family Nothobranchiidae, which today also encompasses the former Aplocheilichthyinae lampeyes alongside the annual Nothobranchius and the West African Aphyosemion group.
As the only described species in its genus, F. flavipinnis occupies an isolated taxonomic position among the West African lampeyes, most of which remain classified in the larger genera Micropanchax, Lacustricola and Poropanchax.
Morphology
Foerschichthys flavipinnis is a small lampeye with a slender, laterally compressed body, a flattened dorsal head profile and the large, upward-oriented eye typical of surface-dwelling lampeyes generally. As its specific epithet and common name indicate, the fins — particularly noted historically in Meinken's original description — carry a yellow cast, a feature that helped distinguish it from other Aplocheilichthys-type lampeyes known at the time.
