Adloff's pearlfish is a compact annual killifish from the shallow seasonal pools of the Laguna dos Patos drainage in Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil — one of eleven species placed in the Garcialebias adloffi species complex by Costa (1998, 2006). Males reach roughly 5 cm and are steel-blue with bold dark vertical bars; females are smaller, pale, and marked with paired black blotches on the caudal peduncle. Like all members of its genus, the species completes its entire life cycle within a single flood season: adults spawn by driving into soft peat or mud, leaving drought-resistant diapausing eggs buried underground, then perish as the pools evaporate. The eggs hatch when seasonal rains refill the basin months later, and the new generation matures in weeks. The IUCN lists Garcialebias adloffi as Endangered, reflecting the severe contraction and degradation of its wetland habitat in the agriculturally intensified Rio Grande do Sul lowlands.

Taxonomy & naming

Garcialebias adloffi was formally described by Ernst Ahl in 1922 as Cynolebias adloffi, based on specimens collected the previous year by dentist and amateur naturalist Alfred Adloff near Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The authority is therefore cited in parentheses — (Ahl, 1922) — indicating that the species has been moved from its original genus. Wilson J. E. M. Costa transferred the species to the resurrected genus Austrolebias in 1998, and his 2006 monograph on the genus in Zootaxa (1213:1–162) remains the comprehensive taxonomic authority, establishing both the phylogenetic framework and a formal redescription of the species.

Costa & Cheffe (2001) further refined the picture with a dedicated redescription of G. adloffi incorporating new locality data from the Laguna dos Patos system, and identified it as the nominal head of a species complex that now includes ten close relatives: A. arachan, A. charrua, A. minuano, A. nachtigalli, A. nigrofasciatus, A. reicherti, A. salviai, A. viarius, and others. Members of this complex share the characteristic deep-bodied, laterally compressed form and the D/A fin-ray ratio that distinguishes them within the genus. The valid name under Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is Garcialebias adloffi (Ahl, 1922).

The species epithet adloffi honours Alfred Adloff, who made the original collections in 1921. No stable vernacular name is widely used in the English-speaking hobby, though 'Adloff's pearlfish' appears occasionally in analogy with the broader pearlfish tradition for South American annuals.

This fish was long listed as Austrolebias adloffi; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes places the species in Garcialebias, and the current combination Garcialebias adloffi is followed here.

Morphology

Garcialebias adloffi is a compact, deep-bodied killifish. Males reach approximately 2 in standard length (SL), with the largest recorded specimen measuring 1.81 in SL; females are appreciably smaller, reaching about 1.5 in SL. The body is rather deep and strongly compressed, the body width measuring roughly 2.2 times the body depth in larger males — a build typical of annual Austrolebias from the southern Pampean lowlands. Meristic counts from the literature include 18–24 dorsal-fin rays, 23–30 anal-fin rays, 27–30 vertebrae, approximately 27 lateral-line scales, a predorsal length averaging 51.4% SL, and a body depth of about 42.0% SL.

Sexual dichromatism is pronounced. Adult males are bright blue-grey to steel-blue overall, with a distinctive bar crossing the eye and 9–12 bold dark vertical bars running down the flanks; the D/A fin-ray deviation ratio is approximately 2.0, a useful diagnostic within the complex. Females and juveniles are light-coloured — pale yellowish to olive — with the bars absent but a pair of black blotches marking the caudal peduncle, a character retained into adulthood in females. Unpaired fins in males are iridescent and edged; in females they are plain and rounded.

Habitat

This species is a strict endemic of the Laguna dos Patos / Lagoa Mirim hydrological system in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil. It inhabits small, shallow, temporary pools and seasonal floodplain depressions — locally called banhados — embedded in the Pampa grassland and associated wetland mosaics of the region. These pools form during the wet season (typically autumn through winter in the austral calendar), reaching depths of a few tens of centimetres, and evaporate completely during the dry months, leaving no surface water.

Water conditions in the banhados are cool by South American standards: FishBase records a temperature range of 68–75 °F, consistent with the temperate climate of Rio Grande do Sul, where winters can be cold and pool temperatures during the wet season are markedly cooler than the tropical killiefish habitats of northern South America. Substrates are soft peat, mud, or fine organic detritus — critical not merely as physical habitat but as the spawning medium into which adults literally dive to deposit eggs. Vegetation along pool margins may include grasses and aquatic macrophytes, but the fish's primary ecological relationship is with the substrate itself rather than with plants.

The species co-occurs with other annual killies of the adloffi complex in portions of its range, and habitat partitioning among these closely related species is not yet fully characterized. The Laguna dos Patos drainage is one of the most species-rich centres of Austrolebias diversity in South America, with multiple congeners occurring sympatrically or in close proximity.

Feeding

Like other Austrolebias, G. adloffi is a carnivore adapted to the invertebrate-rich microhabitats of seasonal pools. The wild diet is presumed to consist principally of small aquatic invertebrates — microcrustaceans such as daphnia, ostracods, and copepods; aquatic insect larvae including mosquito larvae and chironomids; small worms; and other zooplankton — items that bloom rapidly in newly flooded pools and represent a reliable food source during the brief wet season.

In the aquarium, experienced keepers recommend live and frozen invertebrate foods: daphnia, mosquito larvae (both white and black worms), and brine shrimp nauplii for fry. The species is described as moderately difficult to maintain in captivity, partly because its appetite for live food is high and its acceptance of dry or prepared diets is limited. Offering a varied diet of appropriately sized live and frozen invertebrates is the most reliable approach to keeping adults in good condition and stimulating reproductive behaviour.

Mating

Breeding in Garcialebias adloffi follows the annual killifish pattern that is entirely unlike the plant-spawning or bubble-nesting strategies of non-annual species. As the pool season advances and water temperatures and light conditions cue the fish toward reproduction, males compete intensely for spawning access. Dominant males display their bold vertical barring and blue iridescence to rivals and to females — the coloration is both a species-recognition signal within the complex and an advertisement of male quality.

Courtship is direct and vigorous: the male manoeuvres alongside or beneath the female, nudging and pressing her toward the substrate. When a receptive female adopts a head-down posture above a patch of soft sediment, the pair vibrate rapidly and drive together into the peat or mud, momentarily burying themselves to deposit the eggs. The male may repeat this sequence with multiple females within a single pool season. Sexual maturity is reached rapidly — males become reproductively active within 5–6 weeks of hatching, consistent with the compressed life cycle that annual species must complete before pool desiccation.

Breeding

The defining feature of this species' reproductive biology is diapause: the fertilised eggs, once buried in the substrate, enter a state of arrested development that allows them to survive the pool drying completely and persist in the soil until the following rainy season. Incubation lasts 3–5 months under natural conditions, spanning the entire dry season, and the embryos pass through distinct developmental phases — including periods of true diapause — before completing development and hatching when rain re-wets the soil. This is an obligate annual strategy; the eggs do not hatch simply in response to continuous moisture but require the full developmental sequence, including diapause.

In the aquarium, the hobby technique mirrors the natural cycle. A tank of 3–7 US gal with water temperature held at 64–75 °F and at least peat-moss substrate deep enough to allow the fish to dive (a layer at least equal to fish length is recommended) is used for conditioning and spawning. After a spawning period of several weeks, the peat is removed, lightly dried to a slightly moist consistency, sealed in a plastic bag, and stored at room temperature for 5–6 months — simulating the dry season. The peat is then re-wetted and placed in a hatching tray; fry begin to emerge, often within 24–48 hours of wetting. Eggs incubated at 77 °F may hatch in as little as 6 weeks; cooler storage extends the schedule to 5–6 months or more. The species is considered moderately demanding in captivity, requiring live food for conditioning and careful management of the dry-storage phase. Total lifespan is 8–11 months, varying with temperature.

In the aquarium

Garcialebias adloffi is a speciality fish, kept primarily by killifish hobbyists and annual killifish societies rather than in the mainstream ornamental trade. It is assessed as difficult to maintain compared with more forgiving annual species, and success depends on closely replicating the cool-water, peat-substrate conditions of its native banhados. A species tank or paired setup is strongly recommended — males are combative and the compact body plan of the species, combined with male aggression, makes mixed-species housing impractical.

The aquarium should be small (3–7 US gal is adequate for a pair or trio), covered, and maintained at 64–75 °F. The upper end of this range — around 72–75 °F — can be used during active conditioning and spawning; cooler temperatures around 64–68 °F extend the brief natural lifespan. Peat moss as the sole substrate (or as a deep spawning layer over an inert base) is standard practice. Water quality should be good but the species tolerates the soft, slightly acidic conditions of its native pools, and very soft, mildly acidic water is ideal.

Fry are tiny at hatching and require appropriately fine first foods — infusoria, paramecia, or commercial micro-fry powders — before graduating to micro-worms and newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii. Growth is rapid and the fish are robust once feeding well. The combination of vivid male colouration, the remarkable annual biology, and the hands-on involvement of managing the peat-storage cycle makes G. adloffi rewarding for hobbyists prepared to invest in its specific requirements.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Garcialebias adloffi as Endangered (EN) in 2018, reflecting the severe decline and fragmentation of its banhado wetland habitat across the Laguna dos Patos / Lagoa Mirim lowlands of Rio Grande do Sul. The Pampa grasslands and associated seasonal wetlands of southern Brazil are among the most heavily converted biomes in South America: expansion of soy cultivation, intensive rice irrigation, cattle ranching, and urban growth around Porto Alegre and other cities have drained, channelised, or otherwise destroyed large proportions of the temporary pool habitat that annual killies depend on entirely.

Garcialebias adloffi is a strict habitat specialist with no capacity to migrate between isolated pool systems, no ability to persist in permanent water bodies (where predators and competitors eliminate annual species rapidly), and a reproductive strategy that requires intact, undisturbed soft substrate. Any drainage that destroys or compacts the peat and mud layer eliminates not just the adults but the entire egg bank for that locality, ending the local population permanently. Invasive species — particularly the mosquitofish Gambusia holbrooki, now widespread in Rio Grande do Sul — compound the problem by preying on eggs, fry, and small adults in pools where they co-occur.

Ex-situ conservation through the killifish hobby community plays a meaningful role for this and related species: captive populations maintained by hobbyist breeders represent insurance against local extinction events. Nevertheless, long-term survival of wild populations depends on protection and restoration of the remaining seasonal wetlands in the Laguna dos Patos system, and on enforcement of agricultural land-use regulations that currently do little to shield banhado habitats from drainage.
