Garcialebias reicherti is a small, sexually dichromatic annual killifish endemic to temporary seasonal ponds in the Patos-Merín drainage lowlands of eastern Uruguay, with the type locality in Departamento de Treinta y Tres. Like all members of the genus, it survives the annual dry season not as an adult but as diapausing eggs buried in the soft substrate of its ephemeral pools — eggs that can persist through months of desiccation before hatching when the rains return. The species was described in 2004 and is assessed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List (2021), reflecting the severe restriction of its range and the ongoing degradation of the wetland habitats on which it depends.

Taxonomy & naming

Garcialebias reicherti was described by Marcelo Loureiro and Graciela García in 2004, with the type locality cited as a temporary pond 984 ft east of Route 18, approximately 1 mi north of Vergara City, Departamento de Treinta y Tres, Uruguay (32°55′42″S, 53°54′12″W). The species was subsequently validated and discussed in a 2008 Zootaxa contribution by the same authors, confirming its distinction from congeners on the basis of fin morphology, including a dorsal fin origin positioned anterior to the anal fin and a caudal fin ray count of 18–24. The authority is presented in parentheses because the name has since been moved from its original generic placement to Austrolebias.

The fish appears in some databases — including FishBase and the American Killifish Association — under the name Garcialebias reicherti, reflecting a generic reclassification. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the valid combination, and practitioners should check the current Catalog treatment. The species is a sister taxon to Austrolebias charrua, sharing the Cebollatí River basin and the Eastern Wetlands of Treinta y Tres department; the two are distinguished by coloration and meristics and their close phylogenetic relationship has been noted in behavioural studies examining mate recognition. The specific epithet honours an individual named Reichert, following the common killifish tradition of naming new species after collectors and collaborators.

Morphology

Garcialebias reicherti is a compact killifish with a maximum recorded standard length of approximately 1.32 in (about 1.7 in SL in males, 1.6 in SL in females per FishBase), placing it among the smaller members of the genus. The body plan is typical of Austrolebias: laterally compressed, robust through the anterior third, with large scales and substantial, rounded fins. Males carry the vivid sexual dichromatism characteristic of the group — brilliant metallic blues and greens on the flanks with contrastingly dark edges on the unpaired fins — while females are cryptically coloured in muted browns and grey-greens, providing camouflage in the heavily vegetated turbid ponds the species inhabits.

The dorsal fin insertion anterior to the anal fin origin is one of the diagnostic characters separating G. reicherti from related species, combined with the caudal fin ray count of 18–24. In both sexes the fins are well developed; male unpaired fins in particular are enlarged and used extensively in lateral display. Behavioural research (Blengini et al. 2018) documented that males perform elaborate lateral displays featuring fin-quivering and sigmoid body undulations during courtship, displays that are effective even in the turbid, vegetated water that limits visual range in the species' natural habitat.

Habitat

This species is restricted to temporary, seasonally flooded ponds in the Patos-Merín drainage lowlands of eastern Uruguay, with collections confirmed from the Cebollatí River basin area at approximately 32°58′57″S, 53°52′13″W and from the type-locality pond in Departamento de Treinta y Tres. These habitats are shallow, turbid, and thickly vegetated — conditions characteristic of the Eastern Wetlands (Bañados del Este) of Uruguay, a mosaic of wet grasslands, marshes, and temporary ponds that fill during the wet season and dry completely in summer.

FishBase records the water parameters at the type locality as approximately neutral pH (pH 7), 79 °F, and 5 dH hardness. These are not soft-acid blackwater conditions but rather the slightly mineralized, warm, and nutrient-rich waters typical of lowland Uruguayan seasonal wetlands. The pools are turbid enough that visual range is severely limited, which is reflected in the species' heavy reliance on chemical (olfactory) cues for mate recognition, as documented by Blengini et al. (2018) — a behavioural adaptation to an environment where colour signals are unreliable at short range.

Feeding

Garcialebias reicherti is insectivorous, as recorded in FishBase — a diet typical for the genus and consistent with the invertebrate community of productive temporary ponds. Wild fish take aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and other small invertebrates that colonise seasonal pools during the wet season. In the highly productive but short-lived environment of a temporary wetland, rapid energy intake and fast growth are essential; annual killies as a group are adapted for aggressive, opportunistic feeding in the brief window between pool formation and pool desiccation.

In the aquarium, G. reicherti accepts live and frozen foods readily. Daphnia, Artemia nauplii, bloodworm (chironomid larvae), and tubifex are all suitable. Bringing fish into condition for breeding, in particular, benefits from feeding with live or frozen invertebrate prey. Small commercially prepared foods may be accepted over time, but live and frozen items remain the staple for this and related Austrolebias species.

Mating

Courtship in Garcialebias reicherti is intense and multi-sensory. Blengini et al. (2018) documented that chemical communication — olfactory cues released into the water — plays a critical role in mate recognition in this species, a finding linked directly to its turbid-water habitat where visual signals are attenuated. Males perform lateral displays involving fin-quivering and sigmoid body undulations with fast sinuous movements, directing these displays toward potential mates. Females assess males through a combination of these visual displays and chemical signals before consenting to pair for a spawning dive.

The mating system is consistent with the broader Austrolebias pattern: males are territorial and will compete aggressively with rival males for access to suitable spawning substrate and females. In the confined space of a small seasonal pool, male-male competition can be intense. Males have a distinct reproductive season aligned with pool hydroperiod — they must mate, spawn, and complete the embedding of their eggs within the brief wet season before the pool dries.

Breeding

Reproduction in Garcialebias reicherti follows the annual killifish pattern precisely. The pair spawn by diving together into the soft mud, peat, or detritus substrate at the bottom of the pool; the eggs are embedded in the substrate by the spawning act and left there as the pair ascend. The eggs are large and yolk-rich, with tough, adhesive shells that allow them to survive complete desiccation of the substrate. They enter a state of arrested development — diapause — during the dry season, persisting in dried mud for months before hatching is triggered when rainfall re-floods the pool. Adult fish do not survive the dry season; the species' entire wild population effectively passes through the egg stage every year.

In the aquarium, breeding follows the same substrate-spawning protocol used for all peat-spawning Austrolebias. A container of soft peat or coconut coir substrate is placed on the aquarium floor; pairs will dive and spawn in it. After several weeks, the substrate is removed, gently squeezed to remove most moisture but not completely dried, wrapped in damp newspaper or plastic, and stored at room temperature for a minimum of 6–8 weeks (often longer). The substrate is then re-wetted — either placed in water or misted — and hatching typically occurs within 24–48 hours. Fry are large enough at hatching to accept Artemia nauplii immediately. Water temperature for breeding and rearing is best kept in the 72–79 °F range per hobbyist guidance.

In the aquarium

Garcialebias reicherti is a specialist species for experienced killifish keepers rather than a mainstream aquarium fish, but its striking male coloration and fascinating annual life cycle make it a rewarding subject. A species tank or pair/trio setup is standard; males are aggressive toward each other and should not be kept together without ample space and visual breaks. A tank of 11–16 US gal with a soft peat or coir substrate, subdued lighting, and floating plants suits the species well and mimics the turbid, vegetated conditions of its wild habitat.

Water parameters should approximate the type-locality conditions: temperature 72–79 °F, pH around neutral (pH 7 is recorded from the wild; the broader aquarium range of pH 6.5–7.5 is acceptable), and moderate hardness (around 5 dH). The species is not a blackwater fish requiring extreme softness; Uruguayan seasonal ponds are modestly mineralized. Regular water changes with conditioned tap water are appropriate. Because adults are short-lived — wild fish rarely survive more than one season, and aquarium adults typically live under 18 months — maintaining a breeding colony and cycling egg storage is essential for continuity. The species is not listed in mainstream fish stores and is generally traded only within specialist killifish societies and via hobbyist fish-of-the-month lists.

Given its Endangered status and narrow natural range, G. reicherti is a species for which captive breeding has genuine conservation significance. Hobbyist stock maintained through annual killi clubs and the American Killifish Association represents an insurance population for a fish whose wild habitat is actively threatened.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Garcialebias reicherti as Endangered (EN) in 2021. The basis for this assessment is the species' extreme range restriction to seasonal wetland ponds in eastern Uruguay — primarily the Patos-Merín drainage and the Bañados del Este region of Departamento de Treinta y Tres — combined with ongoing and projected habitat loss. The Eastern Wetlands of Uruguay are under pressure from agricultural intensification, particularly the conversion of seasonal grasslands and temporary pond systems to irrigated rice cultivation and soybean production, as well as wetland drainage and channelisation for cattle grazing. Each of these activities eliminates or degrades the ephemeral pool habitat that G. reicherti depends on for its entire life cycle.

The species' biology makes it especially vulnerable: as a strict annual with no adult survival between wet seasons, there is no buffer population in the form of adult fish that might repopulate recovering habitat. If a pond system is destroyed, the local population is gone permanently once the egg bank is exhausted. The close sister relationship with A. charrua means the two taxa share much of the same threatened wetland, and conservation of the broader Eastern Wetlands ecoregion is essential for both. Garcialebias reicherti does not appear to be subject to directed collection pressure, and captive populations held by killifish hobbyists provide a modest but real insurance against further contraction of the wild range.
