Taxonomy & naming
Léon Vaillant described this species as Rivulus geayi in 1899 from specimens gathered by naturalist Martin François Geay during expeditions to French Guiana in 1897–98. The type locality has been a matter of some debate: Vaillant's original description cites the Mahuri River near Cayenne, while the killifish database Killi Data Online places the type locality closer to the Franco-Brazilian frontier near the headwaters of the Carnot and Calçoene rivers at roughly 1476 ft altitude. Both candidate localities fall within the Guiana Shield drainage systems.
The genus assignment has shifted substantially as killifish systematics have matured. The species passed from Rivulus into Anablepsoides (a broad genus encompassing many New World rivulines) and has also appeared under Laimosemion in some recent treatments — reflecting ongoing disagreement about the boundaries of these genera. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, the authority for valid names, governs the accepted combination. FishBase and WoRMS currently list it under Laimosemion geayi, while ITIS records Rivulus geayi Vaillant, 1899 (TSN 647614) as a synonym. Because the genus-level taxonomy remains in flux, the name Laimosemion geayi remains in use in significant portions of the aquarium and systematic literature.
The family is Rivulidae, order Cyprinodontiformes (killifishes and toothcarps), in the broader grouping of South American rivulines that also includes the annual killifish genera of the Neotropical region.
This fish was long listed as Anablepsoides geayi; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes places the species in Laimosemion, and the current combination Laimosemion geayi is followed here.
Morphology
Laimosemion geayi is a small, elongated rivuline reaching a maximum of 2 in total length (FishBase), with most adults commonly measured around 1.6 in. The body plan is typical of surface-oriented rivulines: laterally compressed and slightly dorso-ventrally flattened toward the head, with a superior mouth angled slightly upward for feeding at or near the water surface. The dorsal fin is placed well posterior on the body, above or just ahead of the anal fin, a characteristic arrangement in the rivulid family.
Sexual dimorphism is clear: males are significantly more colourful than females, a pattern typical of the genus. Females are plainer and olive-toned. The species reaches sexual differentiation visible to the keeper by approximately two months of age. Eggs are amber-coloured and notably large relative to body size at 0.06 in diameter — a characteristic of the genus associated with the relatively long incubation period of non-annual rivulines that deposit single, adhesive eggs rather than masses of small eggs.
Habitat
Geay's rivulus inhabits permanent freshwater — rivers, streams, and associated pools — in the Atlantic coastal drainages and Amazon basin systems of the Guiana Shield. FishBase characterises it as benthopelagic and non-migratory, occupying the full water column in slow-current sections of wooded rivers and forest streams with leaf-litter substrates. It is a tropical species maintained in the temperature range 75–82 °F in its natural waters.
The Guiana Shield rivers that drain into the Atlantic between the Orinoco and Amazon deltas — including the Mahuri, the Sinnamary, the Mana, and the rivers of coastal French Guiana and adjacent Brazil — are soft, often tea-coloured forest waters, acidic to near-neutral, flowing over laterite and granite geology beneath dense canopy cover. The leaf-litter bottoms and submerged root tangles provide both feeding habitat and shelter for a small fish at constant predation risk.
Being non-annual is the defining ecological fact about this species. Unlike the annual killifishes of the Venezuelan llanos or the Gran Chaco, which complete their entire life cycle in temporary pools that dry seasonally and bury diapausing eggs in the substrate to survive desiccation, Laimosemion geayi lives in waters that persist year-round. This allows a longer adult lifespan — up to three years in captivity has been recorded — and a more extended, low-rate breeding strategy.
Feeding
In common with most rivulines, Laimosemion geayi is a carnivore that feeds primarily on small invertebrates in the water column and at the surface. In forest streams of the Guiana Shield, the natural diet encompasses aquatic insect larvae, surface-fallen terrestrial insects, small crustaceans, and other invertebrates associated with the leaf litter and root tangles that characterise these habitats. The upturned mouth and surface orientation of the species reflect adaptation to exploiting the surface film, where terrestrial invertebrates frequently land and drown.
In the aquarium the species accepts a wide range of small live and frozen foods: Drosophila fruit flies and small adult mosquitoes (exploiting the surface-feeding habit), Artemia nauplii and adults, small Tubifex, bloodworm (Chironomus larvae), and micro-worms. A varied diet including live foods maintains colour in males and condition in breeding fish. Fry can be raised on newly hatched Artemia nauplii from the earliest days of free-swimming.
Mating
Laimosemion geayi is a non-annual, plant-spawning killifish. Pairs or trios court and spawn in a continuous, low-volume manner throughout adult life rather than in the explosive, compressed breeding events of annual species. The male courts the female with lateral displays emphasising his colouration; when receptive, the female joins him near fine-leaved plants, floating spawning mops, or other fibrous structures near the surface or across the water column.
Males are described as somewhat aggressive, and when re-paired with a female after separation, antagonism can increase. The hobby recommendation is to house a male with one or more females in a tank with sufficient space and cover to allow subordinate fish to escape direct aggression. A species tank or small killifish-only community is the standard approach. Because these are skilled jumpers, a tight-fitting cover is non-negotiable.
Breeding
The pair or trio deposits adhesive eggs singly on fine-leaved plants or the fibres of a floating spawning mop over the course of days and weeks. The productive rate is typically 5–15 eggs per day throughout adult life. Eggs are large (0.06 in diameter) and amber-coloured; breeders collect them by hand or by removing mop sections and incubating eggs separately to protect them from predation by the adults.
Eggs benefit from storage in a separate container with a small amount of acriflavine or methylene blue to suppress fungus; the incubation period at water temperature is approximately 14 days before hatching is triggered by adding fresh water. Fry hatch at a useful size — non-annual rivulines do not produce the minute larvae of many annual species — and can take newly hatched Artemia nauplii as a first food almost immediately. Growth is moderate and fish reach sexual maturity at four to five months. Lifespan in captivity can reach three years, considerably longer than annual killifishes that evolved under very different selective pressures.
Low pH water during the hatching phase is reported to influence sex ratio, with more females produced in acidic conditions — a phenomenon documented in several rivuline species and attributed to environmental sex determination.
In the aquarium
Laimosemion geayi is considered manageable in the aquarium but is rated as difficult to breed by some references, a reputation that likely reflects the care required to collect and incubate the individually laid, adhesive eggs rather than any extreme water-chemistry sensitivity. The species needs a covered tank — rivulines are exceptional jumpers and will escape through the smallest gap in a lid — decorated with floating plants or spawning mops, subdued lighting, and slow or negligible water movement replicating the still, shaded forest streams it inhabits.
Water parameters should be soft and slightly acidic to neutral, matching the Guiana Shield chemistry: temperature 75–82 °F, pH around 6.0–7.0, low hardness. The species can be housed in small tanks — a 10-litre aquarium suffices for a breeding pair or trio according to hobbyist sources — and benefits from a dark substrate and background, which reduces stress and enhances the male's colour display. Good filtration through a small sponge filter maintains water quality without the current that would be inappropriate for a species of still forest waters.
In hobbyist collections it is typically maintained as a species or near-species tank, or with other small, peaceful killifishes of similar water requirements. It is not a fish for the general community tank. The killifish hobby (organisations such as the American Killifish Association and regional equivalents) maintains captive strains, and material is usually obtained through club fish-of-the-month distributions or specialist breeders rather than commercial channels.
Conservation
The IUCN assessed Laimosemion geayi as Least Concern in 2020, revising a Near Threatened assessment from 2014. This positive revision reflects the species' relatively wide distribution across permanent river systems of the Guiana Shield and coastal French Guiana and Brazil, where appropriate forest-stream habitat remains extensive and the species faces no single catastrophic threat.
Nonetheless, the forests and river systems of the Guiana Shield are not without pressure. Deforestation for agriculture, small-scale and artisanal gold mining (with associated mercury contamination and river-bank disturbance), and expanding road infrastructure in previously remote areas of French Guiana, Suriname, and Amapá (Brazil) all threaten the intact, shaded, soft-water streams this species requires. Forest cover is directly linked to the chemistry and temperature stability of small forest streams; clearance causes silting, temperature spikes, and the hardening of previously soft, acidic water. The species does not appear to be targeted by commercial collection for the ornamental trade at a scale that would create population pressure, but its restricted microhabitat preferences — slow, shaded, permanent, soft-water forest streams — make local populations vulnerable to land-use change even where the species as a whole is considered secure.
The hobbyist network plays a quiet role in redundancy: captive populations maintained by killifish enthusiasts provide insurance against local wild-population declines, though the genetic breadth of captive stock for any particular collection locality is unknown.
