Taxonomy & naming
Parabotia mantschuricus was described by the Russian ichthyologist Lev Berg in 1907, with the type locality given as the River Mu-tan-kiang (Mudanjiang River) in the Songhua River basin, northeastern China — syntypes are held at the Zoological Institute in St. Petersburg (ZIN 14085). The species was historically placed in Leptobotia, the large Chinese river loach genus, and older literature and some trade sources still refer to it as Leptobotia mantschurica; the parentheses around Berg's name in the current combination reflect that original placement in a different genus.
The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) now lists the species in Parabotia, a genus that is distinguished from Leptobotia by a somewhat slimmer body form and a bifurcated suborbital spine. The family is Botiidae, subfamily Leptobotiinae — the same lineage as the larger Chinese river loaches. The genus name is a straightforward Latinisation meaning 'near Botia', signalling the genus's close position within the botiid tree.
This fish was long listed as Parabotia mantschurica; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes places the species in Parabotia, and the current combination Parabotia mantschuricus is followed here.
Morphology
Parabotia mantschuricus is a slender, moderately compressed botiid reaching around 7.9–8.7 in standard length — a sizeable loach. The body is elongate compared to the rounder profile of Botia or Chromobotia, the head pointed, and the overall build suited to fast, open-water river swimming rather than bottom-hugging ambush. The basic colouration is pale yellowish or greyish with darker mottling or banding, reflecting the fish's gravelly and stony river-bottom habitat; precise markings vary and detailed published descriptions are limited.
The defining botiid features are present. Below each eye sits an erectile, bifurcated suborbital spine — a forked defence that can be flicked outward when the fish is stressed or handled, readily catching in net mesh and capable of breaking the skin of a careless hand. The body is covered in very small, deeply embedded scales, leaving the skin effectively near-scaleless to the touch; this has direct consequences for medication sensitivity. The caudal fin is forked.
Habitat
This species is native to the Amur River basin of northeastern China and far-eastern Russia, with the type locality in the Mudanjiang River, a tributary of the Songhua, which itself drains into the Amur. The Amur system drains one of the world's colder temperate regions, and the water temperatures in its tributaries reflect this: the Aquarium Wiki records the species' thermal range as 61–68 °F — decidedly cool even by northern-temperate standards and far below the range of tropical botiids such as the clown loach.
In its native rivers the species inhabits freshwater — the Catalog of Fishes notes a brackish tolerance, but the core habitat is running fresh water over gravel, rock and coarse substrate in the foothill and lowland stretches of large river systems. Strong oxygenation and good current are characteristic features of Amur basin rivers, and this fish almost certainly requires them.
Feeding
Parabotia mantschuricus is an omnivore with the bottom-foraging habits typical of botiid loaches: it searches substrate and crevices for small invertebrates including insect larvae, worms, small crustaceans and molluscs. Like other loaches it will take snails, and a group can provide useful biological control of pest snails in a suitable aquarium. Detritus and plant matter round out the diet as opportunistic supplements.
In the aquarium it should be offered a varied, invertebrate-led diet: sinking pellets and wafers as a base, supplemented with frozen or live bloodworm, tubifex, daphnia and small crustaceans. Feeding partly after lights-out suits its crepuscular and nocturnal foraging tendencies. Where multiple fish are kept, enough food should reach every individual — lower-ranking fish in a group hierarchy can be outcompeted at the feeding site if rations are too sparse.
Mating
Published information on the reproductive behaviour of Parabotia mantschuricus in the wild is sparse. As a botiid of temperate rivers it almost certainly follows the pattern seen in Chinese river loaches of this lineage: spawning is likely tied to seasonal cues — spring warming, rising water levels and increased current following snowmelt in the Amur catchment — that stimulate adults to move into suitable gravelly shallows for reproduction.
Sexual dimorphism is not documented for this species in available sources. In related botiids, mature females in spawning condition are typically plumper-bodied than males, but reliable distinction is difficult outside of the breeding season. Aquarium observations of the species' reproductive behaviour are essentially absent from the hobby literature.
Breeding
Parabotia mantschuricus is not bred in home aquaria in any documented sense. As a botiid it is an egg-scatterer with no parental care: eggs are released into flowing water, the adults take no further part, and larvae develop in the current. Replicating the strong seasonal environmental cues — the thermal cycle of a temperate river system, the flood pulse of a major drainage — that would be needed to bring temperate botiids into breeding condition is well beyond the reach of an ordinary aquarium.
There is no record of commercial hormone-induced production of this species, and it is rarely available in the trade at all. A keeper should regard breeding as effectively impossible with current knowledge and availability. Data on this species in captivity remains genuinely sparse.
In the aquarium
Parabotia mantschuricus is a specialist fish, very rarely encountered in the hobby, and its cold-water requirement is the first thing a prospective keeper must grasp: at 61–68 °F it needs a temperature regime closer to a goldfish or dojo loach setup than to a tropical community tank. Heated aquaria running at the standard 75–79 °F are unsuitable. A species tank or a carefully chosen temperate community — unheated or with active cooling in summer — is the correct environment.
Being a botiid, it should be kept in a group: kept alone or in pairs it is likely to become stressed or skittish; a group of five or more allows the fish to form a social hierarchy and behave naturally. The Seriously Fish profile of the genus notes that Parabotia species should be kept in groups of at least three to four minimum. The tank should be large — at least 55 US gal for a group of this 8.7 in fish — with strong filtration, good oxygenation and moderate flow to mimic its river habitat. Substrate of fine gravel or coarse sand suits bottom-foraging behaviour.
Being near-scaleless, this species is sensitive to copper-based medications and should receive half-doses of any treatment. It is prudent to watch for ich, as loaches are often among the first fish to show symptoms. The suborbital spine means all handling or netting should be done with care — a fine-meshed, deep net or a container transfer is safer than mesh that the spine can lock into.
Conservation
Parabotia mantschuricus has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated; no published conservation assessment for the species has been located. Its native range in the Amur basin — spanning northeastern China and far-eastern Russia — is a large but increasingly pressured river system. The Amur and its tributaries face a range of anthropogenic stressors including agricultural runoff, industrial pollution, damming, and water extraction, pressures that have affected fish communities across the basin.
The species is uncommon in the aquarium trade, with very little commercial collection pressure documented. The greater conservation concern for Amur basin fishes is likely habitat quality and river-system integrity rather than ornamental collecting. Targeted scientific surveys and a formal IUCN assessment would be needed to establish the species' population status with confidence.
