Taxonomy & naming
The species was described by Zhu and Wang in 1985 as Noemacheilus callichromus, part of the sprawling old "Noemacheilus" catch-all that nineteenth- and twentieth-century ichthyologists used for most Eurasian stone loaches. As that genus was progressively split apart, the species was moved into Schistura, the genus that now holds the great majority of Asian stone loaches with a similar body plan and finnage. In 2012 Maurice Kottelat amended the epithet from "callichromus" to the grammatically correct feminine form "callichroma" to agree with the feminine genus name Schistura, though the masculine original still appears in older records and some databases.
The genus name Schistura is retained here as the current, Catalog-of-Fishes-recognised placement; readers may also encounter the fish under its original combination, Noemacheilus callichromus, or the intermediate Nemacheilus callichromus, in older literature. The family is Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches, by far the most species-rich family in the loach superfamily Cobitoidea.
This fish was long listed as Schistura callichromus; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes places the species in Schistura, and the current combination Schistura callichroma is followed here.
Morphology
Schistura callichroma is a small, elongate loach, with males reported at roughly 2.56–2.95 in standard length and females somewhat larger at about 3.15–3.54 in. The epithet callichromus is Greek for "beautiful colour" (kalli-, beautiful, + chroma, colour), a nod to the fish's patterning, though as with much of this genus detailed colour description has not been widely published outside the original taxonomic work.
As a member of Nemacheilidae it shares the family's defining traits: a slender, rounded-to-slightly-compressed body suited to holding station in current, a small suckered or semi-suckered mouth with barbels for probing crevices, and — where documented in the genus — a small erectile spine below the eye and very fine, deeply embedded scales that leave the skin close to naked. That near-scaleless condition is a recurring theme across true loaches and carries real consequences for how sensitive the fish is to disease and medication.
Habitat
The species is known from riffle habitat in the Red River (Yuan Jiang / Song Hong) drainage of southern China, with a possible extension into northern Vietnam where the same river system continues. A field collection from the Mengyejiang River recorded the fish over a wide (about 131 ft), shallow riffle of rock and pebble, water depth only 7.9–15.7 in, temperature around 63 °F, pH 8.8, and low mineral content (conductivity ~170 µS/cm, TDS ~85 mg/l) — the classic profile of a cool, clear, fast, well-oxygenated mountain-and-foothill stream running over hard substrate.
This is emphatically not a warm, still, blackwater environment. The habitat data point to a cool subtropical stream loach that needs strong flow and high dissolved oxygen, and the alkaline pH recorded in the field survey is notably different from the soft, acidic water associated with many lowland Southeast Asian loaches.
Feeding
Schistura callichroma is a benthic micro-predator, foraging over sand, gravel, rock and pebble for small insect larvae, worms, crustaceans and zooplankton, with some general omnivory noted alongside the invertebrate diet. It hunts by working crevices between stones rather than sifting soft substrate, consistent with its rocky-riffle habitat.
In the aquarium it should be offered small live and frozen foods — Daphnia, Artemia, bloodworm — which match its natural prey far better than dry flake, which it may largely ignore. A sinking food regime that reaches the bottom current is important, since this is not a mid-water or surface feeder.
Mating
No spawning behaviour, courtship, or sexual dimorphism has been documented for this species in the available sources beyond the size difference between the sexes noted from length data (females running larger than males). Nemacheilid stone loaches as a group are typically egg-scatterers with no courtship display or pair bond described in the literature, and there is no evidence here to suggest Schistura callichroma deviates from that pattern.
Given how little is published on the species specifically, any detail beyond "likely follows the genus-typical scattering pattern in fast water during a seasonal window" would be guesswork; the honest position is that its reproductive behaviour in the wild has not been well studied or recorded.
Breeding
As with the great majority of Nemacheilidae, Schistura callichroma is understood to be an egg-scatterer: eggs are released over gravel and among stones in flowing water, with no parental care afterward. There are no verified reports of this species being bred in the home aquarium, and stone loaches from cool, fast-flowing streams are rarely bred in captivity generally — the combination of a strong current requirement, cool water, and a seasonal spawning trigger is difficult to replicate in an ordinary tank.
Data on this species' breeding is sparse to the point of being essentially absent from the sources available. Prospective keepers should not expect to breed it, and any claim of a specific spawning trigger, egg count, or incubation period for this species specifically would not be traceable to a real source.
In the aquarium
This is a demanding fish for a dedicated flowing-stream setup rather than a general community tank. Seriously Fish-type guidance for this species calls for a powerful external filter turning over four to five times the tank volume per hour, a footprint of at least 120×11.8 in for a small group, and generous weekly water changes of 30–50%, all reflecting its riffle origin. Substrate should be rock, gravel and pebble rather than soft sand, and the water should be kept cool, clear and heavily oxygenated rather than warm and still — a powerhead or spray bar aimed to create real current is appropriate.
Being a nemacheilid, it likely shares the family's sensitivity to copper and full-strength medications through its thin, near-scaleless skin; treat any illness at reduced dose and remove copper-based products before treating. As a small benthic species that naturally forms loose social groups, it should be kept in company of its own kind rather than alone, and tankmates should be other cool-water, current-loving fish rather than typical warm-tropical community species.
Conservation
Schistura callichroma is listed by the IUCN as Data Deficient, reflecting the limited information available on its population size, trend, and full distribution. This status is common across the genus: many Schistura are known from only one or a few streams and have not been surveyed with the intensity needed for a full assessment.
As a range-restricted stream endemic of the Red River basin, the species is potentially exposed to the same pressures affecting many small Asian headwater fishes — damming, sedimentation, and water-quality degradation from agriculture and development — though no specific population data documenting a decline are available. It is not established in the aquarium trade in any significant way, so trade pressure is not a documented concern for this species.
