Macropsobrycon is a small tetra genus (family Characidae) from southeastern South America, with the atlas recording its two species from Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay — a range centered on the Rio de la Plata drainage, alongside a species from the Xingu River in the Amazon basin. Atlas species are small, roughly 1.5–2 in as adults, in line with many characids from this region's open-water and vegetated stream habitats. Beyond the type material and regional survey records, detailed morphological and ecological description of the genus is limited.
Macropsobrycon has no meaningful presence in the aquarium trade — this is a genus known through ichthyological literature rather than fishkeeping, and reliable information on its coloration, social behavior, or breeding habits in the wild is sparse. Both species, M. uruguayanae and M. xinguensis, are currently assessed Least Concern, suggesting neither is under acute pressure, though as with many small-bodied South American stream fish that status may simply reflect limited survey attention rather than confirmed population security.
