About the genus

Nemacheilus is a genus of small stone loaches in the family Nemacheilidae, distributed across Southeast and South Asia — the atlas's 48 species are recorded from Indonesia, Thailand, India, Malaysia, Laos, China, Vietnam and Cambodia. Like other nemacheilids, they are slender, cylindrical, bottom-dwelling stream fish with a small ventral mouth and fine barbels adapted for picking food from gravel and stone in flowing water. The atlas's size range for the genus is unusually wide, 2.9 up to a reported 28 in, though the great majority of species are only a few centimetres long; Nemacheilus was historically used as a broad catch-all for many Asian loaches before later revisions split most of its diversity out into separate genera, so its exact modern boundaries — and outlier records like that — should be treated with some caution.

Nemacheilus loaches see only modest aquarium interest, mostly among hillstream and loach specialists rather than the general trade, since most species lack the striking colour patterns of showier loach genera and are best known from faunal surveys rather than fishkeeping. The conservation picture skews toward stability: the atlas tally is led by Least Concern (18) and Not Evaluated (16), with a smaller tail of Vulnerable (5) and Data Deficient (7) species and only one Endangered and one Critically Endangered listing, consistent with a genus spread across many separate river systems rather than concentrated in one especially threatened basin.
