Neonoemacheilus is a small genus of stone loaches in the family Nemacheilidae, separated out to hold a handful of South and Southeast Asian species previously lumped into the sprawling Schistura/Nemacheilus complex. The atlas covers 5 species, all modest in size at roughly 1.5–4 in, known from hill-stream drainages in India, Myanmar, China, and Thailand. Like other nemacheilid loaches, they have slender, cylindrical, scaleless-headed bodies, a small downturned mouth ringed by rostral and maxillary barbels, and no forked adipose fin, a build suited to a benthic life clinging among gravel and cobble in flowing, well-oxygenated hill streams.
None of the five Neonoemacheilus species in the atlas has any real presence in the aquarium trade; they are known almost entirely from taxonomic and regional faunal survey literature rather than fishkeeping accounts, and detailed data on their biology is sparse. The IUCN picture is correspondingly thin, with two species not yet evaluated and one each rated Least Concern, Near Threatened, and Data Deficient, a pattern that reflects how little targeted assessment small, range-restricted hill-stream loaches like these tend to receive rather than any confirmed decline.
