About the genus

Oxynoemacheilus is a genus of small stone loaches in the family Nemacheilidae, centred on the rivers, springs and closed basins of Anatolia and the wider Middle East — Turkey, Iran, Syria, Iraq, Azerbaijan, Greece, Georgia and Israel form the core of its range in the atlas. The 67 species covered are uniformly small, running 1.5–4.5 in, with the slender, cylindrical, bottom-hugging body plan typical of nemacheilid loaches: a flattened belly, a small ventrally placed mouth with fine barbels for picking invertebrates off gravel, and reduced or absent scales along parts of the body. Many species are narrow-range endemics, described from a single river drainage or even a single spring system, a pattern typical of how isolated Anatolian and Levantine watersheds have produced highly localized loach lineages.

This is not really an aquarium-trade genus — Oxynoemacheilus is of far greater interest to ichthyologists and conservationists than to hobbyists, and the atlas records almost no common names for its species beyond a scatter of English descriptive names tied to individual rivers or lakes. The conservation picture is genuinely concerning: the IUCN tally includes 5 Critically Endangered and 8 Endangered species alongside 14 Least Concern, a heavy skew toward threat that is unusual among freshwater fish genera. That reflects the pressures on Middle Eastern freshwater systems generally — irrigation withdrawal, damming, and groundwater extraction — landing hardest on species whose entire known range can be a single spring-fed stream or small lake basin.
