Paranemachilus is a genus of small stone loaches (family Nemacheilidae) described from freshwater habitats in southern China, with all three atlas species - P. genilepis, P. nonggangensis, and P. pingguoensis - known only from that country; the species names themselves point to the Guangxi karst region, including areas around the Nonggang and Pingguo districts known for isolated limestone stream and cave systems. Atlas specimens run 3–3.5 in. Like other small nemacheilid genera from this part of China, they are narrow-range specialists of clear, fast-flowing karst streams, though the atlas does not have confirmed detail on which species, if any, show cave-adapted traits such as reduced eyes or pigmentation seen in some related genera.
This genus has no meaningful presence in the aquarium trade and is known almost entirely from taxonomic and regional survey literature rather than hobbyist accounts. Its value is scientific: narrow-endemic karst loaches like this are indicator species for a part of China with exceptionally high, still-incompletely-documented freshwater biodiversity. The IUCN tally for the genus - one Data Deficient, one Not Evaluated, and one Vulnerable - reflects both how little formal assessment this fauna has received and a real conservation concern for species restricted to a single or a few small stream systems.
