Paraphanius is a genus of small toothcarps (family Cyprinodontidae, close relatives of Aphanius) native to the Middle East, with the three atlas species - the Persian toothcarp (P. mento), P. mentoides, and P. similis - distributed across Turkey, Iraq, Israel, Lebanon, and Syria. They are compact fish, 2.5–3 in, typical of the group in occupying isolated springs, oases, and short desert or coastal river systems rather than large river basins, and several close relatives in this group tolerate a wide range of salinity, from freshwater seeps to brackish or even mildly saline pools - a trait common across the wider Aphanius-Paraphanius complex of the region.
Paraphanius species are kept mainly by dedicated killifish specialists rather than the general trade, valued for the strong sexual dimorphism typical of the group - males more colourful and patterned than females - and for breeding programs aimed at species whose entire wild range can be a handful of springs. Two of the three atlas species are carried by the CARES conservation-priority program, and the genus's overall IUCN picture (one Least Concern, two Not Evaluated) understates how precarious range-restricted Middle Eastern spring fish can be, since groundwater extraction and spring modification are well-documented threats to this group across the region.
