Parapristella is a small genus of characin tetras native to river systems across Brazil, Colombia, Guyana, and Peru. Both atlas species are modest, schooling fish reaching around 2 in, with the slim, silvery build typical of open-water Amazonian and Guianan characins rather than the deeper-bodied forms found in some other tetra genera.
Parapristella georgiae carries the common name false rummynose tetra, a nod to its resemblance to the true rummynose tetras (Hemigrammus rhodostomus and relatives) that are a long-standing aquarium staple - a red-nosed, banded-tail look that appears more than once among small Amazonian characins. Parapristella aubynei is less documented and has no established common name. Both species are currently Not Evaluated for conservation status, and neither has a strong presence in the aquarium trade, which tends to favor their better-known rummynose look-alikes instead.
