Paraprotomyzon is a small genus of hillstream loaches restricted to fast-flowing streams in southern China, part of the broader balitorid hillstream-loach radiation adapted to torrential, rocky habitat. The atlas covers 5 species, all modest in size at roughly 1.5–3 in, with every atlas record coming from China. Like other hillstream loaches, they have flattened, streamlined bodies and expanded, sucker-like paired fins that let them cling to smooth rock surfaces in swift current, grazing algae and biofilm from stones rather than swimming freely in open water.
None of the five Paraprotomyzon species in the atlas has an established presence in the aquarium hobby; they are known mainly from regional ichthyological surveys of southern China rather than fishkeeping literature, and biological data on the group is sparse. All five species remain formally unevaluated by the IUCN, typical for narrowly distributed hillstream loaches that fall outside the handful of well-studied, widely traded genera in the family.
