About the genus

Parasewellia is a small genus of loaches known only from Vietnam, where both atlas species share a modest adult size of around 2 in. As the name suggests, the genus was described as allied to Sewellia, the well-known Vietnamese hillstream loach genus prized for its flattened, sucker-bodied grip on fast-flowing rock, though Parasewellia itself is a far more obscure genus, known mainly from scattered stream surveys rather than sustained study.

Neither Parasewellia monolobata nor P. polylobata has an established place in the aquarium hobby, and both are currently Not Evaluated for conservation status, a reflection of how little targeted fieldwork has reached this narrow-range Vietnamese genus rather than any evidence that the species are secure. Given Vietnam's fast pace of stream and river modification, a lack of assessment should not be read as a lack of risk.
