Piabina is a small genus of characid tetras native to Brazil and Paraguay, part of the vast diversity of small silvery characins that share the Portuguese/Tupi-derived name 'piaba.' The atlas covers 2 species, both around 3 in as adults, larger than many small tetras but still a modestly sized, laterally compressed fish with the single dorsal fin and small adipose fin typical of the family. Like most of its relatives, it is presumed to be a schooling fish of streams and smaller rivers, though detailed habitat accounts are sparse.
The genus has little presence in the aquarium hobby and is known mainly from taxonomic and regional survey literature rather than as a trade fish; Piabina argentea, the Silver Piabina, is the more documented of the two species. Conservation status is only partly assessed - one species is Data Deficient and the other Least Concern - reflecting how little targeted study either has received relative to more commercially significant characins from the same region.
