Spectracanthicus punctatissimus was originally described as Chaetostomus punctatissimus by Franz Steindachner in 1881 in the Denkschriften der Kaiserlichen Akademie der Wissenschaften in Wien, Mathematisch-Naturwissenschaftliche Classe, volume 43, pages 119 [19], Plate 3 (figures 3–3a). The type locality is the east shore of the Rio Xingu at Pôrto de Mós, Pará State, Brazil, approximately 1°45'S, 52°10'W — in the lower Xingu, not far above the confluence with the Amazon.
The species has passed through several genera: Chaetostomus punctatissimus Steindachner, 1881 was variously treated as Oligancistrus punctatissimus and Parancistrus punctatissimus before Rapp Py-Daniel (1989) erected the genus Spectracanthicus and established Spectracanthicus punctatissimus as the type species. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) and FishBase both recognise the valid combination Spectracanthicus punctatissimus (Steindachner, 1881), with Chaetostomus punctatissimus, Oligancistrus punctatissimus, and Parancistrus punctatissimus as junior synonyms.
In the DATZ-derived hobby literature, the species has been coded as L016, L030, and L315 — three separately submitted registrations originating from visually similar fish collected at different Xingu localities. All three are now unified under S. punctatissimus. The diagnosis of Spectracanthicus relative to similar genera is discussed by Armbruster (2004): the genus is separated from Baryancistrus and certain Hemiancistrus by having fewer than 25 teeth, from Parancistrus by having restricted gill openings, and from all except some Baryancistrus and Parancistrus by the dorsal-fin membrane contacting the adipose-fin spine.
Morphology
Adults reach a maximum standard length of approximately 4 in (FishBase, ref. 36713; PlanetCatfish gives 4 in SL), placing S. punctatissimus among the smaller Hypostominae — modestly larger than Otocinclus and comparable to small Hypancistrus species. The body profile is typically loricariid: depressed, with overlapping bony scute armour and a roughly pentagonal cross-section.
The common name 'spotted' or 'bluespotted' pleco accurately describes the coloration: the ground colour is very dark brown to near-black over the entire body and fins, densely and uniformly covered with very small pale cream to whitish-yellow dots. The dots extend onto the fins, where they appear most distinctly against the dark membrane. At its finest the pattern resembles a dark fabric finely sprinkled with light specks; the density and size of spots vary slightly across populations, which is part of what drove the multiple L-number assignments. A diagnostic character noted in the FishBase morphology account is the presence of yellowish bars on the tips of the dorsal and caudal fins — a feature shared with S. murinus but not all congeners.
The mouth is ventral, with fewer than 25 teeth per side — a key diagnostic count for the genus. The opercle is bar-shaped and eversible with conspicuous odontodes, distinguishing S. punctatissimus from S. murinus (triangle-shaped, non-eversible opercle). Sexual dimorphism follows the standard Ancistrini pattern: breeding males develop elongated interopercular odontodes; females are fuller-bodied when ripe.
Habitat
Spectracanthicus punctatissimus is endemic to the Xingu river basin of Pará State, Brazil, with both historical and recent records concentrated in the middle and lower Xingu. PlanetCatfish field photographs show specimens captured at Cachoeira Grande do Iriri (3°50'35.5″S, 52°44'08.3″W) and at Belo Monte reach of the Rio Xingu — the latter a locality now dramatically altered by the construction of the Belo Monte hydroelectric dam, whose reservoir inundated extensive rocky rapids habitat.
The Xingu is a clearwater river draining the ancient Precambrian rock of the Brazilian Central Plateau. At rocky rapids sites the water is typically warm (79–86 °F), soft (conductivity 15–30 µS/cm), slightly acidic (pH 6.2–7.0), and highly oxygenated by the turbulent flow over exposed boulders and cobble. Spectracanthicus punctatissimus occupies the fast-water rocky zone, sheltering in crevices between boulders and feeding on the dense biofilm (periphyton, diatoms, aufwuchs) that coats submerged rock surfaces in well-lit, high-current areas. This is the same hyperenriched rocky microhabitat exploited by Hypancistrus zebra, Baryancistrus xanthellus and other specialist Xingu loricariids.
In the aquarium PlanetCatfish does not list specific water-parameter ranges for the species, and FishBase records it in a broad tropical freshwater, demersal category; the Xingu field data cited above provide the best available guidance. High current, high oxygen, and warm, soft-to-moderately-hard water reflect field conditions.
Feeding
Spectracanthicus punctatissimus is an aufwuchs and biofilm grazer typical of the hard-surface-scraping Hypostominae. On Xingu rocks it crops the dense periphyton community — diatoms, cyanobacteria, soft filamentous algae, and associated micro-invertebrates — that develops in the high-light, high-flow rocky-rapids environment. This productive biofilm layer is far more nutritionally dense than the thin biofilm available in still or slow-water habitats, which in part explains why Xingu specialists thrive in well-lit, current-driven aquariums but struggle in slow, shaded setups.
In the aquarium, quality sinking algae wafers (spirulina-rich, high vegetable content) should form the dietary staple, supplemented with blanched zucchini (courgette), cucumber, blanched spinach or kale, and spirulina tablets. Biofilm on mature driftwood, smooth stones and tank glass will also be grazed continuously. A small component of frozen bloodworm or similar invertebrate food can be offered occasionally; the species is not strongly carnivorous but occasional invertebrate grazing is consistent with its diet of aufwuchs, which contains benthic micro-organisms.
Avoid a diet of predominantly meat-based foods — this is not a predatory loricariid like Leporacanthicus. The fish is an active, confident feeder and will compete well for sinking wafers, but should not be kept in tanks where heavy biofilm grazers (large Pterygoplichthys) consume all available food before it reaches bottom.
Mating
Mating behaviour in S. punctatissimus follows the general Ancistrini pattern observed in its genus and ecological analogues (Hypancistrus, small Hypostomus). Males are territorial around cave sites — crevices between boulders or narrow rocky underhangs in the wild; ceramic tubes, slate caves, or sculpted rock structures in the aquarium. In a densely furnished tank a degree of male coexistence is possible, but persistent male-on-male aggression at a shared cave site will occur if territory options are insufficient.
Conditioning for breeding is primarily achieved through varied, high-quality feeding, maintaining good water quality with regular changes, and optionally introducing a temporary reduction in temperature of 34–36 °F followed by a recovery, mimicking the dry-season / wet-season transition of the Xingu. A well-conditioned female will be visibly broader across the mid-body than a male of similar length; the papilla is enlarged and protruding when she is ripe. No detailed published breeding account for S. punctatissimus specifically exists in the academic literature, but the general mode can be inferred with confidence from its Ancistrini membership.
Breeding
Spectracanthicus punctatissimus is a cave-spawning species with paternal brood care. The male guards and fans the egg clutch inside the selected cave, and the female's role ends at spawning. Egg adhesion, incubation, and early fry care follow the cave-spawner template common to the Hypostominae: the male fans to oxygenate and removes infertile or fungused eggs, continuing until fry are mobile.
No formally published clutch-size data are available for S. punctatissimus specifically. Based on the small adult size (max ~4 in SL) and general scaling in the family, typical clutch sizes are likely in the range of 15–40 eggs. At 81–82 °F incubation is expected to take approximately 5–7 days. The fry are miniature adults with the species' spotting pattern visible early. Captive breeding has been achieved by dedicated Xingu-pleco hobbyists; the PlanetCatfish Cat-eLog lists no formal breeding reports as of 2025, suggesting successful reproduction is not yet routinely documented on that platform, but the species is not considered impossible to breed given appropriate conditions.
A key practical consideration is that Belo Monte dam construction eliminated or severely degraded the natural collecting habitat of many of the S. punctatissimus populations that generated the L030/L315 codes. Wild import has become less predictable, lending additional value to establishing captive-breeding lines of this species.
In the aquarium
At under 4.5 in maximum SL, Spectracanthicus punctatissimus is a genuinely small pleco well suited to tanks of 20–30 US gal for a single specimen or pair, and 40–55 US gal for a small group of three to five with multiple cave territories. The aquarium should strongly reflect the Xingu rocky-rapids habitat: smooth river pebbles or flat stones, slate cave structures or ceramic breeding tubes, minimal fine substrate (coarse gravel or bare bottom is fine), and vigorous current from a powerhead or wavemaker. A circulation rate of 8–10× the tank volume per hour is appropriate. Excellent filtration — biological and mechanical — is essential given the soft, low-buffering-capacity water required.
Water parameters: temperature 79–84 °F, pH 6.5–7.2, hardness soft to moderately soft (preferably below 8°dGH). Weekly partial water changes of 25–30% with temperature-matched, dechlorinated water are the minimum. The species is sensitive to elevated nitrate over time; keeping nitrate below 20 ppm is advisable.
Compatibility is generally good with non-aggressive Xingu community fish (medium tetras, small-to-medium cichlids that are not highly territorial, Corydoras). The species is not aggressive toward fish of other genera, but two males of the same species in a small tank without sufficient territorial separation will exhibit persistent skirmishing. It should not be kept with large, boisterous plecos (Pterygoplichthys, large Hypostomus) that will displace it from food and caves. Its small size and bold rockwork-dwelling behaviour make it a rewarding focal species for a Xingu biotope or rocky-river setup.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Spectracanthicus punctatissimus as Least Concern in November 2018. The assessment notes the species' distribution in the Xingu river basin and the absence of evidence for steep population decline across the full range. However, the Belo Monte hydroelectric dam — with a reservoir that inundated extensive stretches of the Xingu's middle section, including the Volta Grande do Xingu (the 'Big Bend'), one of the most biodiverse fish habitats in Amazonia — represents a major and irreversible loss of rocky-rapids habitat within the species' range.
Many Xingu-endemic loricariid specialists, including S. punctatissimus, were collected at localities now permanently flooded or altered by the Belo Monte reservoir, whose filling began in 2016. The IUCN assessment acknowledged this pressure, but concluded that the species' distribution extends beyond the directly impacted zone. Ongoing downstream effects on the Xingu's hydrology, sediment regime, and water temperature caused by altered flows remain a concern. The ornamental-fish export ban on many Xingu species by IBAMA in recent years has reduced legal trade pressure but also made captive stock more critical to long-term availability in the hobby. Building self-sustaining captive populations is ecologically and commercially important for this and allied Xingu species.
