Circulating in the hobby for decades under the code L020 before its scientific description, Spectracanthicus zuanoni is a medium-sized Hypostominae from the lower Xingu rapids with one instantly recognisable field mark: a constellation of large, bright white spots against a near-black body that sets it apart from every congener at a glance. Described only in 2014, it honours the Brazilian ichthyologist who first collected and recognised it as new — and has since earned a modest but loyal following for its striking appearance and manageable size.

Taxonomy & naming

Spectracanthicus zuanoni was formally described by Cristiano Chamon and Lúcia Helena Rapp Py-Daniel in 2014 as part of a comprehensive taxonomic revision of the genus Spectracanthicus (Chamon & Rapp Py-Daniel, Neotropical Ichthyology 12(1): 1–25). The type locality is Ilha do Sr. Izaltino, rio Xingu, Altamira, Pará, Brazil (3°16'21"S, 52°12'07"W). The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Spectracanthicus zuanoni Chamon & Rapp Py-Daniel, 2014 as the valid name.

The genus Spectracanthicus Nijssen & Isbrücker belongs to the tribe Ancistrini within the subfamily Hypostominae, the largest and most speciose subfamily of Loricariidae (Armbruster, 2004). Ancistrini diagnosis includes: evertible cheek plates bearing conspicuous odontodes (in most genera), a dorsal-fin membrane connecting the last dorsal ray to the adipose-fin spine — a synapomorphy shared with several related genera.

The 2014 revision reassigned several formerly recognised species and synonymised the genus Oligancistrus with Spectracanthicus; L354, long treated as a separate undescribed taxon, was subsequently confirmed to be S. zuanoni as well (Konn-Vetterlein, pers. comm. 2019, cited in ScotCat). This means both L020 and L354 currently refer to the same species. S. zuanoni is distinguished from all congeners by its colour pattern of large white spots (vs. small yellowish dots in S. murinus, S. punctatissimus, and S. tocantinensis, and an unmarked dark body in S. immaculatus).

Morphology

Spectracanthicus zuanoni reaches a maximum standard length of approximately 5 in (PlanetCatfish, citing the description), though FishBase records 9.5 in TL — the discrepancy most likely reflects inclusion of the caudal fin in one measurement and not the other, or variation between the maximum in the description and exceptional field specimens; the ~5 in SL figure is considered reliable for typical adults.

The body shape is fusiform-normal by Loricariidae standards: a compact, moderately depressed body with a large, rounded head, well-developed dorsal fin, and a distinctive dorsal-to-adipose membrane connection — the synapomorphic character uniting Spectracanthicus and its closest allies. The coloration is the species' most conspicuous feature: a black to very dark grey body densely covered with large, rounded or slightly irregular white spots of roughly uniform size. The spot size and relative brightness are diagnostic, being markedly larger than the fine yellowish dots of its congeners.

The dorsal fin is large and sail-like, especially prominent in males. Sexually mature males have a longer, broader head and a notably greater growth of odontodes behind the gill covers (interopercular odontodes, forming bristle-like arrays when the evertible opercle is displayed) and on the pectoral-fin spines (ScotCat). The opercle in this species is described as bar-shaped and eversible with conspicuous odontodes, unlike the triangle-shaped, non-eversible opercle of S. murinus. Females are more modest in odontode development and slightly smaller-headed.

Habitat

Spectracanthicus zuanoni is known from the lower courses of the Rio Xingu, Pará State, Brazil — specifically the Amazon's major southern tributary that drains through the Pará lowlands and is characterised by a remarkable system of rapids and rocky channels called the 'Big Bend' (Volta Grande do Xingu). This is among the most fish-biodiverse river systems in Amazonia and the source of a disproportionate number of described pleco species.

In its natural habitat, S. zuanoni is a moderate rheophile: found on rock-bottom areas subjected to backwater and strong currents, up to 7 ft depth (Chamon & Rapp Py-Daniel, 2014, summarised in FishBase and ScotCat). It is not an extreme torrent species restricted to the fastest whitewater, but it requires well-oxygenated water with good current. Fieldwork confirmed individuals sheltering singly or in groups of three under large boulders (adults) and in spaces beneath smaller rocks (juveniles).

Coexisting species recorded in the same habitat include Ancistrus sp., A. ranunculus, Baryancistrus xanthellus (L018/L085), Spectracanthicus punctatissimus (L052), Hopliancistrus tricornis, Parancistrus nudiventris, Peckoltia vittata, and Pseudancistrus aff. barbatus — a community consistent with the mixed lithophilic community typical of the lower Xingu rapids. Water in this system is warm (79–86 °F), soft, and acidic to neutral (pH 5.5–7.0).

Feeding

Spectracanthicus zuanoni is a nocturnal forager that feeds primarily on algae and periphyton grazed from rock surfaces, and on the broader benthic community of organisms associated with biofilm. FishBase summarises the diet as active nocturnal feeding on algae and other food items from periphyton by grazing over rock bottom (citing Zuanon 1999 and Rapp Py-Daniel & Zuanon 2005). The species is classified as an omnivore — the periphyton community includes bacteria, microalgae, diatoms, invertebrate larvae, and detritus.

This is not a wood-eating xylophage. While the presence of driftwood is still recommended for shelter and surface colonisation, S. zuanoni's dietary requirements in captivity are primarily met by good algal growth, supplemented with algae wafers, spirulina-based foods, blanched vegetables, and occasional protein in the form of tablet food, frozen bloodworm, or brine shrimp. ScotCat recommends a varied diet with both vegetable and protein components.

In a well-established aquarium with moderate to bright lighting, this species will actively graze rock and glass surfaces at night. The hobbyist practice of leaving some rocks in the aquarium unwashed to accumulate algal growth directly benefits S. zuanoni. Heavy protein feeding should be avoided; the species' natural diet skews toward plant-derived carbon.

Mating

Courtship behaviour in S. zuanoni has been documented in captivity — PlanetCatfish records four breeding events — though detailed ethological descriptions are not widely published. The Spectracanthicus reproductive mode follows the general Ancistrini pattern: the male selects, defends, and prepares a suitable cave site, typically a rock crevice, cave, or provided ceramic tube, and attracts a ripe female to spawn within it.

Male dominance hierarchies develop when multiple males are present, with larger or more odontode-elaborated individuals typically displacing rivals from preferred sites. The eversible interopercular odontode arrays are displayed prominently during male–male interactions and courtship, functioning both as threat displays and as tactile stimulation for the female during close contact in the cave.

Mature females can be distinguished from males by their less developed odontodes and, when gravid, by a noticeably rounder, fuller abdomen visible from above. Females away from the spawning site are largely ignored by attending males in most accounts. Given the documented coexistence of multiple individuals in nature — groups of up to three under the same boulder — this species appears to have at least moderate conspecific tolerance outside of spawning situations.

Breeding

Spectracanthicus zuanoni is a cave-spawner with paternal brood care, following the standard Ancistrini pattern. The male guards the eggs and early fry within the spawning cave, fanning them to maintain oxygenation and removing infertile or fungused eggs. PlanetCatfish records four breeding reports in the community database, indicating that captive reproduction is achievable but not routine.

Successful spawning triggers reported by hobbyists include stable high temperatures (79–84 °F), excellent water quality with moderate hardness and acidic to neutral pH, vigorous current through the tank, and gradual conditioning on protein-supplemented foods. The species is rheophilic and benefits from powerheads or wavemakers to maintain the flow regime it experiences in the wild. Stagnant or sluggish conditions are likely to compromise breeding readiness.

Egg and fry details are not formally published. By analogy with the well-documented S. punctatissimus, the clutch is moderate in size (likely 20–60 eggs), adhesive, and incubates over approximately 5–8 days. The male continues to guard for the first days after hatching. Raising the fry requires fine-grained algal foods, fine-ground spirulina, and good flow to keep detritus from settling on the vulnerable fry. The long period as an undescribed L-number fish means that some early hobbyist breeding accounts are filed under 'L020' rather than the species name.

In the aquarium

Spectracanthicus zuanoni is a popular Xingu pleco with a strong aesthetic appeal and a manageable adult size. A standard-length of ~5 in makes a single adult suitable in a tank of 20–25 US gal; for a breeding group the tank should be substantially larger, with multiple caves and rocks providing ample territory partition.

The primary husbandry requirement is strong, oxygen-rich water flow. This is not a fish for a still or low-flow aquarium. Powerheads, canister filter outlets directed across rock surfaces, or wavemakers should provide vigorous circulation. The filtration system needs to handle a correspondingly high turnover rate. Water temperature 79–86 °F; pH 5.5–7.0; soft to moderately hard water is preferred, consistent with the Xingu's naturally soft, slightly acidic chemistry.

Rock architecture is essential. Large, smooth boulders, ceramic caves (Pleco tubes), and stacked rock formations with crevice hiding spots are all used. The fish spend daylight hours sheltering in caves and emerge to feed at night or in subdued light. Glass and well-lit rock surfaces will accumulate algae that this species readily grazes.

S. zuanoni is generally compatible with other Xingu-type plecos of different genera. Intraspecific aggression between males is moderate; multiple males require multiple discrete cave sites to coexist peacefully. In the hobby the species has shared tanks with Baryancistrus, Peckoltia, and Ancistrus without significant conflict provided the tank is adequately furnished. Peaceful mid-water fish — tetras, pencilfish — make suitable upper-level companions.

Conservation

Spectracanthicus zuanoni has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List (status: Not Evaluated as of 2026). Its known range is restricted to the lower Rio Xingu in Pará State, Brazil — the same river system that became the focus of intense international conservation debate with the construction of the Belo Monte hydroelectric complex, whose reservoirs and altered flow regime transformed portions of the Xingu's Volta Grande section downstream of Altamira.

The type locality (Ilha do Sr. Izaltino, Altamira) and the broader lower Xingu rapids are acknowledged as an extraordinary centre of loricariid endemism — a high proportion of the dozens of pleco species described from this system are not found elsewhere. Any significant alteration to the hydrological and physical character of the rapids habitat (current strength, rock-bottom character, temperature, oxygen levels) poses direct risk to lithophilic rheophiles like S. zuanoni.

The species appears in the ornamental trade as both wild-collected and occasionally captive-bred specimens. Brazil's negative list restricts commercial export of many Xingu endemics, and the regulatory status of this species under Brazilian IBAMA regulations is worth verifying before trade. A formal IUCN assessment is overdue given the degree of habitat modification in the Xingu system and the species' restricted range.
