Prodontocharax is a small genus of South American tetras found in Brazil, Peru, and Bolivia, within the Amazon basin. The atlas's 2 species, Prodontocharax alleni and P. melanotus, are small fish at 1.5–2 in, with the laterally compressed, silvery body and small adipose fin typical of Characidae, and like most small Amazonian characins are presumed to move in loose schools through the shaded, slow-flowing forest streams and tributaries characteristic of the basin.
This is a genus of largely scientific rather than aquarium interest; it does not have an established presence in the hobby trade, and most available information comes from taxonomic and faunal survey work rather than captive-care accounts. Both atlas species currently carry a Least Concern IUCN status, suggesting no immediate conservation concern has been identified for either, though as with many small-bodied Amazonian characins, detailed population data are limited.
