Pseudogobius is a genus of small gobies in family Gobiidae, distributed widely across estuaries and coastal freshwater habitats of the Indo-Pacific, from Iran through South and Southeast Asia to Japan. The atlas's three species - including the Java goby, P. javanicus - are diminutive fish, 1.5–2 in, sharing the goby body plan of a blunt head, elongated body, and fused pelvic fins forming a sucker-like disc used to hold position on mud, sand, or rock in current. They typically inhabit brackish estuaries, mangrove creeks, and the tidal-influenced lower reaches of rivers rather than open freshwater.
Like most small estuarine gobies, Pseudogobius species see little mainstream aquarium interest; they turn up mainly in specialist brackish-water and native-fish setups rather than general tropical tanks, valued there for their bold territorial behavior and ability to hold position against tidal flow. Two of the three atlas species have not yet been formally evaluated by IUCN, and the one assessed is rated Least Concern - typical for a genus whose members are locally common but taxonomically under-studied across such a broad range.
