Sabanejewia is a genus of small spined loaches (family Cobitidae) native to rivers and streams of central and southeastern Europe, the Caucasus, and parts of the Middle East - the atlas's 10 species draw on Romania, Russia, Bulgaria, Iran, Azerbaijan, Croatia, Georgia, and Hungary. Close relatives of the better-known genus Cobitis, Sabanejewia species share the family's hallmark: an erectile defensive spine set beneath each eye. The body is slender and elongate, built for burrowing into fine sand or silt, where the fish spend much of the day buried with only the eyes and barbels exposed. Atlas species fall in a fairly narrow 3.5–5.5 in range.
Sabanejewia has little to no presence in the mainstream aquarium trade; most species are documented chiefly through European ichthyological survey work and freshwater conservation monitoring rather than the hobby. Several carry protected status under European conservation frameworks, reflecting sensitivity to river channelization, siltation, and water-quality decline. The atlas tally of three Vulnerable species among the assessed group fits that pattern - localized, habitat-sensitive riverine endemics rather than a widespread, adaptable genus.
