The Mdoka population
Buccochromis nototaenia "Mdoka" is the Mdoka population of Buccochromis nototaenia, a geographic colour form from the Malawi coast of Lake Malawi in the far northern part of the lake. It is the same species as Buccochromis nototaenia, distinguished by its collection locality and local coloration; aquarists keep and breed it as a discrete, provenance-labelled line.

About the species
Buccochromis nototaenia, the stripeback hap, is one of Lake Malawi's roving sand-zone hunters: a streamlined haplochromine that cruises the open bottom just off the beaches and runs down the juvenile cichlids living there. It carries a single dark band slanting along the back — the 'stripeback' of its English name and the literal meaning of its species epithet — and grows into a powerful predator that keepers measure in feet, not inches. Its very name is a small taxonomic argument, because the authority that governs fish nomenclature and the specialist whose literature most aquarists follow do not agree on what to call it.
