Callochromis pleurospilus is a small, restless sand-dweller of Lake Tanganyika's shallow coastal margins — the kind of fish that spends its life over open sediment rather than the photogenic rock walls that draw most attention to the lake. Drab and silvery at a glance, the males turn iridescent when they spread over a self-dug sand crater to court, and the whole genus shares a startling escape trick: faced with a predator, the fish dives straight into the substrate and vanishes, waiting out the danger buried in the sand. It is widespread and common across most of the lake, which makes it an instructive case study in how a thriving species can still be quietly exposed to the basin-wide pressures reshaping Tanganyika.
