Taxonomy & naming
Etia nguti was described by Ulrich K. Schliewen and Melanie L. J. Stiassny in 2003, in the journal Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters, from material collected in the River Mamfue (also rendered Mamfe), a tributary of the upper Cross River basin in Cameroon. The paper erected both a new species and a new genus, Etia, to contain it, and the genus has remained monotypic — nguti is its only species. The authors found the fish so anatomically distinctive that they could not assign it to any existing African cichlid group, leaving it as incertae sedis (of uncertain placement) within the family. It is now placed in its own tribe, Etiini, within the African subfamily Pseudocrenilabrinae. The describers tentatively allied Etia to the broad assemblage of tilapiine-grade cichlids — the so-called haplotilapiine lineage they defined in the same work — but stressed that its exact relationships were unresolved. Subsequent molecular studies have made the case for its antiquity stronger rather than weaker: phylogenomic analyses recover Etia near the very base of the African cichlid tree, in some reconstructions as the sister lineage to nearly all other African cichlids (excluding only the deep outgroups Heterochromis and Hemichromis). It is, in other words, a relict — a phylogenetically isolated survivor rather than a member of any of the great species flocks. The genus name honours the British ichthyologist Ethelwynn Trewavas (1900–1993), the foremost cichlid systematist of the twentieth century, whose initials 'E.T.' are echoed in the name; the species epithet is a toponym for the village of Nguti, near which most of the type series was caught.
Morphology
Etia nguti is a small, deep- and short-bodied cichlid, compressed from side to side. The largest measured specimen — a male — reached 5 in in standard length, while females in the type series were considerably smaller (the largest about 3 in SL), so adult males are the markedly larger sex. The fin counts are diagnostic-grade detail: roughly fifteen dorsal spines and ten soft rays, three anal spines and seven to eight soft rays, over twenty-five vertebrae. The mouth is small and set slightly low on the head (subterminal), and the upper lip carries a distinct crease. In life the fish is a fairly plain greyish to olive-brown, far from the jewel tones of many of its rift-lake relatives; preserved specimens develop a strongly marked oblique black bar across the front of the body, and a scaleless, darkly pigmented blotch sits on the upper-rear corner of the gill cover (the dorsocaudal field of the opercle), a feature the describers singled out. The spinous part of the dorsal fin is deeply notched, or excavated, along its upper margin. The teeth of the outer row in the jaws are cuspidate, with some or all of them bearing three cusps (tricuspid) — a dentition that suits a generalist feeder rather than a specialist predator. Sexual dimorphism is real but understated: beyond the large size difference between the sexes, the species lacks the gaudy male nuptial coloration seen in many African cichlids.
Habitat
The species is known only from a very small area: the region around the village of Nguti, in the Mamfue River and its immediate surroundings, within the upper Cross River basin of southwestern Cameroon. No population has been documented anywhere else, which makes it both a Cameroonian endemic and, on present knowledge, a single-river one. This is soft, warm West African rainforest water — a clear-to-tea-stained forest stream rather than a great lake. Recorded depths are shallow, on the order of 0 to 2 metres, and the fish shows a clear split of habitat with age: juveniles were beach-seined from the shallow inshore margin in only a few centimetres of water, favouring shallow riffles with a moderate current, while adults moved into deeper water and congregated around submerged tree branches and rocky outcrops. The describers noted this as one of the few clear behavioural observations available for the species. As is typical of forest streams in this part of Cameroon, the water is warm and mineral-poor; in the absence of a published in-situ chemistry profile, the appropriate envelope inferred from the regional biotope and from how the fish has been maintained is soft, gently acidic to near-neutral water at tropical temperatures.
Feeding
Etia nguti is a low-trophic-level generalist. Examination of its diet shows that it feeds mainly on detritus — the soft organic film and debris of the stream bed — supplemented opportunistically by insects and plant material. FishBase places it at a trophic level near 2.4, consistent with a detritivore that is not a dedicated predator. The dentition matches this lifestyle: the small, slightly inferior mouth and the cuspidate, partly tricuspid outer teeth are tools for browsing and scraping soft material from surfaces rather than for seizing prey. In its forest-stream community the fish therefore functions as a bottom-oriented forager working over substrate, branches and rock, taking whatever organic matter and small invertebrates the current delivers.
Mating
What is known of reproduction in Etia nguti is unusual enough that it formed part of the argument for its distinctiveness. The species is a mouthbrooder, but one that — according to the describers — does not form lasting pair bonds. Spawning takes place between a male and a female in temporary couples over open substrate, rather than within a defended joint territory of the kind built by biparental substrate-spawning cichlids. After the eggs are laid and fertilised, the pair bond effectively dissolves and care falls to a single parent. This combination — open-substrate spawning by transient couples, followed by uniparental mouthbrooding — sits between the two great African cichlid reproductive strategies and is part of what makes the species hard to slot into any existing group. Detailed courtship behaviour has not been documented in the wild.
Breeding
Etia nguti is a maternal mouthbrooder. After spawning over open substrate, the eggs and then the larvae are taken up and incubated orally, and it is the female that almost always carries them; the male is reported to brood only rarely. The original description characterises the species as an ovophilic, larvophilic mouthbrooder with delayed uptake — meaning the parent does not necessarily collect the eggs the instant they are laid, but takes up the developing eggs and larvae into the mouth, where they complete their early development in safety. This is a different strategy from the cave- and pit-spawning biparental care of many West African cichlids, and the absence of a stable pair bond means there is no two-parent brood defence after spawning. Clutch and fry figures specific to this species have not been published; among small African mouthbrooders of comparable size, broods are typically modest, on the order of a few dozen eggs, though that is a genus-typical inference rather than a measured count for nguti. Reproduction in the aquarium has been little reported, in keeping with how seldom the fish is kept.
In the aquarium
Etia nguti is a connoisseur's fish rather than a hobby staple. A small number reached European and North American aquarists in the years just after its 2003 description — it briefly traded as a curiosity among West African cichlid specialists — but it has never become established in the hobby, and reliable husbandry accounts are scarce. Anyone keeping it should treat the following as reasoned best practice extrapolated from its biology and from the care of comparable small forest-stream cichlids, not as a well-trodden recipe.
Given a maximum size around 5 in for males and a habit of using both open shallows and structure, a single pair or small group is best housed in a tank of roughly 35.5–47 in length (about 55 US gal or more), aquascaped to mimic a Cameroonian forest stream: a sand or fine-gravel bed, plenty of driftwood and branch tangles, some rounded rocks forming refuges and sightline breaks, and subdued lighting. A gentle to moderate current suits a fish whose juveniles favour riffles. Water should be soft and warm — temperatures in the mid-20s Celsius (roughly 73–82 °F) and a pH from about 6.0 to 7.5 are appropriate to a soft-water rainforest stream species; very hard, alkaline water is unnatural for it. Stable, clean water from generous changes matters more than chasing exact numbers.
Feeding is straightforward for a detritivorous generalist: a varied diet of quality sinking pellets and flake alongside small frozen or live foods (bloodworm, daphnia, brine shrimp) and some vegetable or algae-based matter will keep it in condition. As a mouthbrooder that does not pair-bond, it is unlikely to show the dramatic biparental cave-spawning of many West African cichlids; breeders should watch for a female holding rather than expecting a defended pit of fry. Because it is so rarely available and so little documented, the honest summary is that Etia nguti is seldom kept, and most prospective keepers will never encounter one for sale.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Etia nguti as Data Deficient (assessed 16 February 2009 by T. Moelants; published 2010), reflecting how little is known about its distribution, abundance and ecology. The population trend is listed as unknown, and the assessment records no information on specific threats. That said, the species' apparent confinement to a single small area around Nguti in the Mamfue/upper Cross River system is itself a concern: a fish known from one short reach of one river has, by definition, no margin if that habitat is degraded. The lowland forest streams of southwestern Cameroon face the usual pressures of the region — deforestation and associated siltation, agricultural runoff, and small-scale fishing — none of which has been specifically quantified for this cichlid. It carries no CITES listing and is of no fisheries interest. The most useful thing that could change its status is simply more fieldwork: until its true range and population are mapped, 'Data Deficient' is the most honest verdict, and a precautionary one given how narrow its known range is.
