The South Tanzania population
Greenwoodochromis christyi "South Tanzania" is the South Tanzania population of Greenwoodochromis christyi, a geographic colour form from the Democratic Republic of the Congo coast of Lake Tanganyika in the far northern part of the lake. It is the same species as Greenwoodochromis christyi, distinguished by its collection locality and local coloration; aquarists keep and breed it as a discrete, provenance-labelled line.

About the species
Greenwoodochromis christyi is a stocky, deep-bodied cichlid endemic to Lake Tanganyika, where it hunts small fish and invertebrates along the dim rocky slopes and rubble far below the reach of most divers. Pulled up only occasionally in gillnets set at 40 metres and deeper, it is a rarely seen predator whose flanks are speckled with iridescent dots that read better than bright color in near-darkness. It is also a biparental mouthbrooder — both parents take turns carrying the brood — and the type species of a small, deep-water genus that taxonomists have shuffled between tribes for decades.
