The Nkhudzi population

Labidochromis shiranus "Nkhudzi" is the Nkhudzi population of Labidochromis shiranus, a geographic colour form from the Malawi coast of Lake Malawi in the southern part of the lake. It is the same species as Labidochromis shiranus, distinguished by its collection locality and local coloration; aquarists keep and breed it as a discrete, provenance-labelled line.

About the species

Labidochromis shiranus is a small, plainly coloured mbuna from Lake Malawi, one of the lesser-known members of a genus better known in the hobby for the bright yellow Labidochromis caeruleus. Like every Labidochromis, it carries the genus's diagnostic narrow, forceps-tipped snout, built for plucking small invertebrates out of rock crevices rather than grazing algae from open stone. It is a fish known mainly from collection-locality records around the central lake rather than from the aquarium trade.
