Lethrinops sp. "Aulonocara Type" "Liuli" is the Liuli population of Lethrinops sp. "Aulonocara Type", a geographic colour form from the Tanzania coast of Lake Malawi in the northern part of the lake. It is the same species as Lethrinops sp. "Aulonocara Type", distinguished by its collection locality and local coloration; aquarists keep and breed it as a discrete, provenance-labelled line.

About the species
Lethrinops sp. "Aulonocara Type" is an undescribed sand-dwelling cichlid recorded at Liuli on the Tanzanian shore of Lake Malawi. The trade name records a recurring problem in the field identification of deep sand-dwelling haplochromines: this fish's general body form and colouration recall Aulonocara, the lateral-line-sensing "peacock" genus, closely enough that it can be mistaken for one at a glance, even though it is a Lethrinops, identifiable by its oblique, protrusible sand-sifting mouth rather than by an enlarged sensory lateral-line system. No authority, publication, or FishBase entry exists for this form.
