It is the same species as Lethrinops sp. "Dark", distinguished by its collection locality and local coloration; aquarists keep and breed it as a discrete, provenance-labelled line.

Lethrinops sp. "Dark" is an undescribed sand-dwelling cichlid recorded in Lake Malawi's South East Arm, named for an overall darker body tone than is typical of the mostly pale, silvery Lethrinops that share its sand habitat. It has no formal description, authority, or FishBase entry, and is known only by this trade name.
