The Maison Reef population
Mylochromis durophagus "Maison Reef" is the Maison Reef population of Mylochromis durophagus, a geographic colour form from the Malawi coast of Lake Malawi in the far northern part of the lake. It is the same species as Mylochromis durophagus, distinguished by its collection locality and local coloration; aquarists keep and breed it as a discrete, provenance-labelled line.

About the species
Mylochromis durophagus is a snail-crushing haplochromine cichlid endemic to Lake Malawi, described as recently as 2025 from rocky shores in the northwest of the lake. Its name — roughly 'hard-eater' — points to its defining feature: a lower pharyngeal bone armed with heavy, hemispherical molar-like teeth built to crush hard-shelled invertebrates. It is one of only a handful of Mylochromis to evolve this molariform dentition, and it differs from the others in its less steeply sloping head and deeper, rock-associated build.
