The Gome population

Mylochromis epichorialis "Gome" is the Gome population of Mylochromis epichorialis, a geographic colour form from the Malawi coast of Lake Malawi in the south-central part of the lake. It is the same species as Mylochromis epichorialis, distinguished by its collection locality and local coloration; aquarists keep and breed it as a discrete, provenance-labelled line.

About the species

Mylochromis epichorialis is a medium-sized open- and rocky-substrate haplochromine cichlid endemic to Lake Malawi, originally described by Ethelwynn Trewavas in 1935 from Deep Bay (Chilumba) at the lake's northern end. A elongate, sediment-sifting predator reaching about 20 cm, it belongs to the diverse Mylochromis assemblage of sand- and rock-margin foragers. It is one of the comparatively few Malawi haplochromines to carry a Least Concern conservation assessment, reflecting a wide distribution across both ends of the lake.
