The Hora Mhango population

Mylochromis rotundus "Hora Mhango" is the Hora Mhango population of Mylochromis rotundus, a geographic colour form from the Malawi coast of Lake Malawi in the northern part of the lake. It is the same species as Mylochromis rotundus, distinguished by its collection locality and local coloration; aquarists keep and breed it as a discrete, provenance-labelled line.

About the species

Mylochromis rotundus is a sand- and intermediate-zone cichlid documented from Hora Mhango on Lake Malawi's northern shore, a member of the large genus Mylochromis whose species are generally larger and more predatory or generalist in habit than the algae-grazing mbuna of the lake's rocky littoral. Its species epithet, straightforwardly Latin for "round," points to a distinctively rounded body or head profile that helps set it apart from the genus's many more elongate, torpedo-shaped relatives.
