The Mucansi population
Neolamprologus falcicula "Mucansi" is the Mucansi population of Neolamprologus falcicula, a geographic colour form from the Burundi coast of Lake Tanganyika in the far northern part of the lake. It is the same species as Neolamprologus falcicula, distinguished by its collection locality and local coloration; aquarists keep and breed it as a discrete, provenance-labelled line.

About the species
Neolamprologus falcicula is a small, understated lamprologine cichlid endemic to Lake Tanganyika, living along the rock-and-sand fringe of the lake's northern shore. It belongs to the celebrated "princess" lineage that includes Neolamprologus brichardi and Neolamprologus pulcher, but it broke from their colonial habit: falcicula nests in solitary pairs and raises only a handful of fry at a time. Plain grey-beige and easy to overlook, it is most interesting for what it reveals about how this fish flock splinters into closely packed, narrowly divided niches.
