Otopharynx panniculus "South East Arm" is the South East Arm population of Otopharynx panniculus, a geographic colour form from the Malawi coast of Lake Malawi in the southern part of the lake. It is the same species as Otopharynx panniculus, distinguished by its collection locality and local coloration; aquarists keep and breed it as a discrete, provenance-labelled line.

About the species
Otopharynx panniculus is a sand- and intermediate-zone cichlid documented from the South East Arm of Lake Malawi, part of the genus Otopharynx, a group of mid-water and rock-sand transition haplochromines that includes some of the lake's more elegantly finned species. Its species epithet, a Latin diminutive meaning "little cloth" or "veil," suggests a fish with delicately extended or veil-like fins — a fitting name in a genus already known for producing some of Lake Malawi's more ornamentally finned cichlids.
