Taxonomy & naming
Paratheraps sp. "Catemaco" is a trade label for an undescribed cichlid. Paratheraps is an older genus name for part of the Vieja group of Mexican and Central American cichlids, and the label uses that older name. Lake Catemaco is in Veracruz, Mexico, and the label points to that lake, but the atlas does not say which described species, if any, the form belongs to. The form is undescribed, and its identity and range are not documented in the sources behind the atlas.
Morphology
No description of the form's appearance is recorded in the atlas's sources. Imperial Tropicals lists a maximum size of 14 inches (about 14 in), which is the seller's figure.
Habitat
Imperial Tropicals gives the region of origin only as Central America. The label refers to Lake Catemaco in Veracruz, Mexico, a volcanic crater lake; the seller does not state the origin more closely.
Feeding
Imperial Tropicals lists flake or pellet, frozen and live foods.
Mating
Not documented for this form.
Breeding
Not documented for this form. The seller lists the fish as captive bred.
In the aquarium
Imperial Tropicals lists it as aggressive, suited to being kept alone, in pairs, or with similarly sized Central or South American cichlids such as Midas cichlids, Jack Dempseys and Texas cichlids. It gives pH 7.1-8.0, hard water and 76-82 °F. These are the seller's figures.
Conservation
An undescribed form has no IUCN category, and none is claimed here. Population and range data for it are not documented in the atlas's sources.
