The Hongi Island population

Petrotilapia genalutea "Hongi Island" is the Hongi Island population of Petrotilapia genalutea, a geographic colour form from the Tanzania coast of Lake Malawi in the northern part of the lake. It is the same species as Petrotilapia genalutea, distinguished by its collection locality and local coloration; aquarists keep and breed it as a discrete, provenance-labelled line.

About the species

Petrotilapia genalutea is one of the most widely distributed mbuna in Lake Malawi, a large, thick-lipped algae-comber that grazes the loose fuzz of aufwuchs from rocky and sediment-mixed shallows. Described by A. C. Marsh in 1983 from Monkey Bay, it lends its name to one of the three habitat-and-pattern "groups" into which the genus is informally divided. Males wear a dull blue-grey ground with orange flanks and the yellow throat and cheeks that gave the species its name; females and juveniles are pale with a row of blotches and a black band in the dorsal fin.
