The South East Arm population

Placidochromis acuticeps "South East Arm" is the South East Arm population of Placidochromis acuticeps, a geographic colour form from the Malawi coast of Lake Malawi in the southern part of the lake. It is the same species as Placidochromis acuticeps, distinguished by its collection locality and local coloration; aquarists keep and breed it as a discrete, provenance-labelled line.

About the species

Placidochromis acuticeps is a small, deep-water haplochromine cichlid endemic to Lake Malawi, described in 2004 by Mark Hanssens as part of a wholesale revision of the lake's deep-living Placidochromis. It is known only from Mvunguti in the south of the lake, where it lives below the reach of recreational divers. Its name — 'sharp head' — captures the angular, pointed profile that, together with a set of fine meristic differences, separates it from its many deep-water relatives.
