The Chuanga population

Placidochromis ordinarius "Chuanga" is the Chuanga population of Placidochromis ordinarius, a geographic colour form from the Mozambique coast of Lake Malawi in the south-central part of the lake. It is the same species as Placidochromis ordinarius, distinguished by its collection locality and local coloration; aquarists keep and breed it as a discrete, provenance-labelled line.

About the species

Placidochromis ordinarius is a small, little-known haplochromine cichlid endemic to Lake Malawi, one of the many deep-water Placidochromis named in a single stroke by the Belgian ichthyologist Mark Hanssens in his 2004 monographic revision of the genus. The epithet ordinarius is Latin for 'ordinary' or 'plain,' a candidly deflationary name for a species that stood out from its relatives precisely by lacking any single striking feature — distinguished, like most of this revision's fish, on fine measurement rather than on appearance. It is documented from the Chuanga locality on Lake Malawi, and like its many relatives in the same revision it is known chiefly from preserved, trawled specimens rather than from living, brightly coloured fish.
