The Kadango population

Placidochromis trewavasae "Kadango" is the Kadango population of Placidochromis trewavasae, a geographic colour form from the Malawi coast of Lake Malawi in the southern part of the lake. It is the same species as Placidochromis trewavasae, distinguished by its collection locality and local coloration; aquarists keep and breed it as a discrete, provenance-labelled line.

About the species

Placidochromis trewavasae is a small, little-seen haplochromine cichlid endemic to Lake Malawi, known only from a narrow band of deep water (about 50–70 m / 165–230 ft) in the lake's southeastern arm. Described in 2004 from museum specimens and named for the pioneering British ichthyologist Ethelwynn Trewavas, it belongs to a flock of dim-light, bottom-dwelling Placidochromis that almost never reach hobbyist tanks. It is a fish far better documented as a preserved specimen and a row of meristic counts than as a living animal, which makes it a useful reminder of how much of Malawi's celebrated cichlid diversity lives out of sight and out of the trade.
