The Chituta Bay population
Reganochromis calliurus "Chituta Bay" is the Chituta Bay population of Reganochromis calliurus, a geographic colour form from the Zambia coast of Lake Tanganyika in the southern part of the lake. It is the same species as Reganochromis calliurus, distinguished by its collection locality and local coloration; aquarists keep and breed it as a discrete, provenance-labelled line.

About the species
Reganochromis calliurus is a slender, silvery cichlid endemic to Lake Tanganyika, the sole member of its genus and one of the lake's understated sand- and mud-dwellers. It makes a living patrolling the gently sloping sediment of deeper coastal waters, hunting shrimp and other invertebrates well below the depths most aquarium-trade Tanganyikans inhabit. Its most surprising trait is its breeding strategy: it is a biparental mouthbrooder, with male and female taking turns carrying the eggs and fry inside their mouths, swapping the brood back and forth in a quiet rocky cave.
