About the species

Tropheops sp. "Rust" is an undescribed mbuna cichlid documented from the northern shore of Lake Malawi around Nkhata Bay, Lions Cove, and Kawanga Rocks. Its trade name refers to the reddish-orange, rust-toned colouring reported for breeding males, distinguishing it from the more common blue and barred Tropheops forms found elsewhere in the lake. It has never been given a formal scientific description, and no authority, IUCN status, or FishBase entry should be attached to it.
