The Tanzania population
Tyrannochromis maculiceps "Tanzania" is the Tanzania population of Tyrannochromis maculiceps, a geographic colour form from the Malawi coast of Lake Malawi in the far northern part of the lake. It is the same species as Tyrannochromis maculiceps, distinguished by its collection locality and local coloration; aquarists keep and breed it as a discrete, provenance-labelled line.

About the species
Tyrannochromis maculiceps is a large predatory Lake Malawi cichlid documented from a handful of localities spanning much of the lake, from Lupingu in the north to Gome and Mbenji Island in the south. Its species name, from the Latin for 'spotted head,' names a diagnostic marking pattern on the crown. It belongs to Tyrannochromis, the 'tyrant cichlids' — the largest and most powerfully built of Lake Malawi's ambush-hunting predatory haps, apex predators within the lake's rocky and intermediate zones.
