Striuntius is a small genus of barbs in family Cyprinidae from Sundaland Southeast Asia - Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand. The atlas covers 2 species with a wide size spread, from 2 in up to a substantial 7.5 in, reflecting how much larger the genus's best-known member grows compared with a typical small tetra-sized barb. Like other barbs in this region, they are active, schooling cyprinids of lowland rivers and streams.
The spanner barb (Striuntius lateristriga) is the aquarium-trade name here, long sold in the hobby under earlier genus placements such as Barbonymus or Puntius before this genus was split out - it earns its common name from a dark, wrench-shaped mid-body marking, and its larger adult size means it needs a bigger community tank than most barbs kept alongside it. The lined barb (S. lineatus) has a horizontal-stripe pattern but a much smaller hobby footprint. Both atlas species are assessed Least Concern by the IUCN, consistent with a genus that remains widespread and common across its Southeast Asian range.
