Amblystilbe howesi is a small characid of the Amazon basin, reaching barely 4.2 cm standard length and known from Bolivia, Brazil, and Peru. Originally described under the genus Amblystilbe by Henry Weed Fowler in 1940, it was later transferred to Prodontocharax when Amblystilbe was established as a junior synonym. Quietly positioned within the subfamily Cheirodontinae, it is a freshwater benthopelagic species that remains poorly known in both science and the aquarium hobby, holding a Data Deficient assessment on the IUCN Red List.

Taxonomy & naming

Amblystilbe howesi was originally described by Henry Weed Fowler in 1940 as Amblystilbe howesi, based on material collected during a 1937–1938 expedition to Bolivia by Arthur Gordon Howes and his family for the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia. The genus Amblystilbe is now treated as a junior synonym of Prodontocharax, and the species is correctly cited as Amblystilbe howesi (Fowler, 1940), with parenthetical authority reflecting the change of genus.

Prodontocharax belongs to the subfamily Cheirodontinae within the large family Characidae. The Cheirodontinae are predominantly small characids of South America, characterised by modest size and, in several genera, a distinctive tooth morphology. Prodontocharax itself is a small and relatively obscure genus, and A. howesi shares the subfamily with well-known miniature characins but remains far less studied than most of its relatives.

This fish was long listed as Prodontocharax howesi; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes places the species in Amblystilbe, and the current combination Amblystilbe howesi is followed here.

Morphology

Amblystilbe howesi is a diminutive fish, with a maximum reported standard length of 1.7 in. As a member of the Cheirodontinae it is expected to show the slender, laterally compressed body typical of the subfamily, with a small mouth, relatively large eyes, and a silvery overall coloration common to many small Amazonian characids.

Detailed morphological data in the accessible literature are sparse. The combination of small adult size, benthopelagic habits, and Amazonian distribution aligns it with the ecologically modest but taxonomically rich guild of miniature characids that make up much of the biomass in South American lowland streams and rivers. Published accounts do not record unusual fin modifications or distinctive colour markings beyond what is expected for a typical small cheirodontine.

Habitat

The species is recorded from the Amazon basin across a broad geographic range spanning Bolivia, Brazil, and Peru. FishBase categorises it as a freshwater benthopelagic species, indicating it occupies the lower water column and vicinity of the bottom, a typical niche for small characids feeding on fine particulate matter and small invertebrates in soft-bottomed lowland waters.

Specific habitat data for A. howesi are not well documented in the available literature. The Amazon basin encompasses an enormous range of freshwater environments, from nutrient-poor blackwater streams to whitewater floodplain systems, and without detailed collection records it is not possible to assign the species confidently to a particular habitat type. Feeding

Male cheirodontines may display minor breeding coloration or behavioural cues during courtship, but detailed accounts for this species are absent. The general pattern for small Amazonian characids involves group spawning triggered by environmental cues such as water changes, slightly cooler temperatures, or the introduction of soft, slightly acidic water, though whether A. howesi follows this pattern specifically is not documented.

Breeding

Captive breeding of Amblystilbe howesi is not documented in the hobby literature available for this species. By analogy with other small cheirodontine characids, spawning would be expected to involve egg-scattering over fine-leaved plants or a suitable spawning medium, with the female depositing small adhesive eggs that hatch after a few days at tropical temperatures.

Parental care is absent in the group, and adults would be expected to consume eggs if left in the same vessel. Fry of similarly sized characids typically require very fine first foods such as infusoria or commercial fry preparations before accepting newly hatched brine shrimp. Given that this species is not established in the aquarium trade, breeding accounts remain anecdotal at best.

In the aquarium

Amblystilbe howesi is not an established aquarium fish and is not available through the mainstream ornamental trade. Its small adult size of 1.7 in SL would make it suitable for a well-planted nano or species aquarium if it were available, and by analogy with other small cheirodontine tetras it would likely do best in a group, in soft to moderately hard water at tropical temperatures.

Any specimens that enter the hobby would most probably be incidental catches mixed with other small characids from South American collecting localities. The lack of a widely used common name reflects its minimal presence in the trade. Aquarists with an interest in rare or unusual small tetras would need to rely on specialist importers or hobbyist networks for access.

Conservation

Amblystilbe howesi is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dating to 22 April 2014. A Data Deficient listing indicates that insufficient information is available to make a direct or indirect assessment of extinction risk — not that the species is necessarily secure, but that its biology, distribution, and population trends are too poorly known to assign a threat category.

The species' broad distributional footprint across Bolivia, Brazil, and Peru in the Amazon basin suggests it is not an extremely narrow endemic, which is a mild reassurance, but the absence of systematic survey data means that population size and trends are unknown. No specific conservation measures are known to be in place for this species. Improving taxonomic knowledge and field survey coverage of the Cheirodontinae across the Amazon basin would be the most productive path toward a more informed IUCN assessment.
