Taxonomy & naming

This is an undescribed form: no scientific name, authority or type material stands behind it, and its identity and range are not documented in the sources the atlas uses. "Teles Pires" is a hobby locality label for the river the fish is collected from. Both sellers list it as Thayeria sp.

Morphology

The sellers describe a silver and black body, the dark stripe typical of penguin tetras, and a bright red tail.

Habitat

The label points to the Rio Teles Pires, an upper tributary of the Rio Tapajós in Brazil. No habitat measurements are recorded.

Feeding

Penguin tetras are omnivores that take small live foods and flake at all levels of the water (genus-level); the sellers give no diet for this form.

Mating

Thayeria are schooling fish that swim with the head tilted upward (genus-level). Spawning of this form is not documented.

Breeding

The genus scatters adhesive eggs among fine plants (genus-level). Imperial Tropicals says penguin tetras are easy to breed; no breeding record for this form is held by the atlas.

In the aquarium

Dan's Fish and Imperial Tropicals describe penguin tetras as hardy, active and peaceful, and this locality as sharing those traits with the addition of the red tail. Keep them in a group.
