About the genus

Trichogaster is a genus of small to medium labyrinth fish (gouramis) native to slow, vegetated freshwater habitats - ponds, ditches, floodplains, and rice paddies - across South Asia, from Pakistan and India through Nepal, Bangladesh, and Myanmar. Atlas species run 3.5–5.5 in. Like other anabantoids, they carry a labyrinth organ that lets them gulp air at the surface and survive in oxygen-poor water, an adaptation well suited to the stagnant, weed-choked pools they favour. Males build bubble nests at the surface and guard the eggs and fry, a breeding pattern shared across the gourami family.

This is one of the aquarium hobby's most familiar gourami genera. The dwarf gourami (T. fasciata) and honey gourami (T. chuna) are staples of the peaceful community-tank trade, prized for their small size, calm temperament, and - in the dwarf gourami's many colour forms - bright finnage. The banded gourami (T. bejeus) and thick-lipped gourami (T. labiosa) are traded less often but share the same easygoing character and undemanding care. All four atlas species are assessed Least Concern, a comfortable status reflecting their wide distribution and tolerance of the disturbed, human-altered wetland habitat common across the Indian subcontinent.
