West of the Andes, the land tilts toward the Pacific and the rain almost never stops. This ecoregion gathers the short, steep rivers of the Colombian Chocó and western Ecuador with two big exceptions — the Atrato, which runs north to the Caribbean, and the San Juan, which empties to the Pacific. The crest of the Cordillera Occidental walls the whole region off from the Amazon and Orinoco, and that wall is the point: cut off for millions of years, the fishes here evolved on their own. More than 70% of the species are found nowhere else, and the cichlids — eartheaters, basketmouths, the giant turquoise cichlid — are a trans-Andean lineage with no close neighbors to the east.
Geography & hydrology
FEOW draws this ecoregion (number 301, the North Andean Pacific Slopes - Río Atrato) around every Pacific-slope river from the Golfo de San Miguel in western Panamá, south through the Panamanian Darién and the Colombian Chocó, across all of western Ecuador, to the Río Piura in northernmost Peru. The named rivers run to a long list — Atrato, Chucunaque, San Juan, Patía, Esmeraldas, Guayas, Tumbes, Piura — but most of the territory is a comb of small, independent watersheds draining straight off the mountains. Elevations climb from the coastal plain to peaks above 5,2461 ft on the Cordillera Occidental, so the rivers are short, high-gradient, and shallow, with little or no floodplain. On the Pacific side they feel a strong tidal pulse near their mouths (FEOW Ecoregion 301).
Two rivers break the pattern. The Atrato rises on the western slope of the Cordillera Occidental near Quibdó and runs almost due north for about 416 mi, hemmed between the main Andes and the low coastal Serranía del Baudó, before spilling into the Gulf of Urabá on the Caribbean. For a river that modest in length it moves an enormous amount of water — discharge on the order of 4,000–5,0 ft³/s — and dumps so much sediment that it is steadily filling the gulf at its mouth. It is navigable by small craft as far up as Quibdó and ranks among Colombia's most-used inland waterways (Britannica; FEOW Ecoregion 301). The San Juan, by contrast, drains the same wet interior southward to the Pacific, and the two rivers nearly touch at their headwaters near the Istmina divide — a low watershed that has let fishes pass between Caribbean and Pacific drainages and shaped the fauna they share.
The Serranía del Baudó is the geological oddity here: a low coastal range, the narrowest and youngest of Colombia's cordilleras, separated from the Andes proper by the Atrato valley. Between that range and the Andes lies the trough that the Atrato and San Juan occupy. Discharge and silt loads across the ecoregion are historically low except during heavy rain — which, in the Chocó, is most of the time. Annual rainfall in several of these drainages runs from roughly 9,000 to 12,0.5 in, among the highest figures recorded anywhere on Earth, and Quibdó on the upper Atrato is one of the rainiest towns on the planet, with storms on most days of the year. There are few natural lakes on the coastal plains, but the lower Atrato carries a sprawling system of ciénagas — swampy floodplain lagoons — that store water and fish through the wet and dry swings (FEOW Ecoregion 301; flood-hazard assessment of the Atrato, Columbia University).
Water & habitat
Rain is the organizing fact of this ecoregion. The Chocó sits under a near-permanent convergence of moist Pacific air against the Andean wall, and the result is one of the wettest lowland rainforests in the world — more than 39 ft of rain a year over parts of the Bajo Baudó, and 8,000–12,0.5 in across much of the Atrato and San Juan country. With that much water coming down, the rivers are fast-flushing and, in their upper reaches, run clear and cool over rock and gravel; lower down they slow, warm, and turn turbid where they wind through forest and swamp. Most of the smaller Pacific-slope streams are high-gradient and short, draining to the sea within tens of kilometers, with significant tidal mixing at their mouths (FEOW Ecoregion 301; Nature and Culture International, Bajo Baudó).
The Atrato itself shifts character along its length. Near Quibdó it is still a mountain-fed river; by the time it reaches the lower basin it has built a wide, low-gradient floodplain of ciénagas, oxbows, and flooded forest, much of it under mangrove and swamp toward the Gulf of Urabá. That lower stretch is where the fishery concentrates and where the cichlids on this roster are mostly caught. Water chemistry tracks the geology and the rainfall: soft, weakly mineralized, and on the acidic side. FishBase records Geophagus pellegrini from waters of pH about 5.5–6.0 with negligible hardness, the soft-acid signature of a rainforest river drawing off heavily leached terrain; the more lowland, harder-water Kronoheros umbrifer is reported nearer neutral to slightly alkaline (pH ~7.0–7.9). Temperatures sit in the warm tropical band, roughly 66–82 °F.
The ecoregion's habitats grade from mangroves and dry-to-moist coastal forest up through montane cloud forest, and at the far southern tip, around the Río Piura, the wet Chocó gives way abruptly to the edge of the Sechura Desert — one of the sharpest rainfall gradients on the continent packed into a single ecoregion. For fishes, the practical division is between the swift, oxygen-rich upland streams, where astroblepid climbing catfishes, trichomycterids, and loricariids dominate, and the warm, turbid, swampy lowlands of the Atrato and lower San Juan, where the larger cichlids, characins, and catfishes live. Few of these rivers have big floodplain lakes; the ciénagas of the lower Atrato are the main standing-water habitat, and they swell and shrink with the rains rather than with a single annual flood pulse, since in much of the Chocó it rains hard in every month (FEOW Ecoregion 301; Urrea et al., Seasonality of Rainfall in Colombia).
The cichlid fauna
The cichlids here belong to what ichthyologists call the trans-Andean fauna: lineages stranded on the Pacific-Caribbean side of the Andes when the mountains rose through the late Miocene and Pliocene, splitting an older, wider distribution into eastern (cis-Andean) and western (trans-Andean) halves. Musilová and colleagues reconstructed exactly this for two of the genera on the roster — Andinoacara and Mesoheros — and found the same vicariant history in both: an ancestral range fragmented by Andean uplift and by the closing of the Central American isthmus, with the Colombian-Ecuadorian Chocó as a shared center of diversity. The fishes look familiar to anyone who knows Amazonian cichlids, but they have been on a separate trajectory for millions of years (Musilová et al. 2015; Albert et al., Miocene tectonism and cis-/trans-Andean separation).
The roster's eartheater is Geophagus pellegrini, the yellowhump eartheater, a substrate-sifting geophagine restricted to the Atrato, San Juan, and Baudó basins — a tight trans-Andean endemic that takes mouthfuls of sand and detritus and sorts edible matter through its gill rakers. It belongs to the small G. steindachneri species group associated with northwestern South America, and it is a mouthbrooder, the female carrying eggs and fry. The IUCN lists it as Data Deficient, a recurring verdict for fishes from a region where survey effort is thin.
The heroine cichlids — the deep-bodied 'mojarras' and basketmouths — make up the rest. Caquetaia kraussii, the yellow mojarra, is a predatory cichlid with a famously protrusible jaw, native across the Atrato, Magdalena, and Maracaibo systems and the most widespread cichlid on the roster; it has expanded its range in Colombia and is a staple of local fisheries. Kronoheros umbrifer (often listed as K. umbriferus, long known as Caquetaia umbrifera) is the heavyweight — the turquoise or 'umbee' cichlid, an open-water piscivore reaching about 18.5 in and regarded as the largest of all Neotropical cichlids, hence the name (Kronos, the Titan). It ranges through the Atrato and Magdalena drainages in Colombia and the Tuíra-Chucunaque in Panamá, hunting smaller fishes such as Astyanax, shrimp, and crabs, and guarding its eggs on open substrate. Mesoheros is the most strictly Chocó-tied of the heroines: M. atromaculatus is known from the Atrato, San Juan, and Baudó basins, M. ornatus from the same trans-Andean drainages — both substrate-spawning lowland cichlids, and both products of the radiation Musilová's team traced across the isthmus. Several of these genera (Caquetaia, Kronoheros, Mesoheros) were re-circumscribed in Říčan et al.'s 2016 revision of Middle American heroine cichlids, which is why older aquarium labels — Cichlasoma umbriferum, Caquetaia umbrifera — keep shifting.
What ties the assemblage together is isolation. FEOW puts species-level endemism above 70%, with whole endemic genera among the catfishes and characins and a fauna 'highly distinct at the species, and sometimes generic, level' from its cis-Andean counterparts. The cichlids are a small part of that diversity — the headline fishes are the astroblepid and loricariid catfishes of the uplands and the characins of the lowlands — but they show the same signature: a handful of genera, each with a few species, each restricted to these Pacific-and-Atrato drainages and nowhere else (FEOW Ecoregion 301; Maldonado-Ocampo et al., Checklist of the freshwater fishes of Colombia).
Conservation
The dominant threat in this ecoregion is gold. The Chocó is rich in alluvial gold, and decades of dredge-and-excavator mining — much of it illegal and tied to armed groups — have torn up riverbeds and flushed mercury and sediment into the water. Miners use mercury to amalgamate gold and then burn it off or wash it into the river; it accumulates up the food chain into the fish that riverside communities eat. The Atrato and its tributaries, including the Quito and the lower San Juan, are among the most contaminated rivers in Colombia, and the human toll has been documented in detail: Afro-Colombian and Indigenous Embera and Wounaan communities depend on the river for water, food, and travel, and at least 37 children were reported to have died after drinking poisoned water in the years leading up to the landmark court case (ABColombia; Mongabay).
That case made legal history. In Judgment T-622 of 2016, Colombia's Constitutional Court declared the Atrato River, its basin, and its tributaries a 'subject of rights' — a legal entity entitled to protection, conservation, and restoration — and ordered the government to clean up the water, halt illegal mining, confiscate machinery, ban toxic substances such as mercury, and run toxicological and epidemiological studies. It was among the first rulings anywhere to grant a river legal personhood, and it wrote 'biocultural rights' into Colombian law, treating the river's health and the communities' culture as inseparable. A body of Guardians of the Atrato now represents the river (Atrato River Decision T-622/16; ABColombia).
Implementation has lagged the ruling. Studies through the 2020s keep finding mercury where the science predicted it: a survey of children in three Atrato municipalities found average blood mercury of 2.5 µg/L, with 12.3% over the WHO threshold of 5 µg/L — rising to nearly 34% in Unguía, where fish is eaten almost daily and mercury exposure tracked directly with how often children ate fish. Toxic-metal work across the basin links the contamination squarely to illegal gold mining and warns of risks to aquatic life and people alike (Calao-Ramos et al., blood Hg/Pb in Atrato children; toxic metal(loid)s in the Atrato basin, Environmental Research). In October 2025, three UN special rapporteurs went public with a letter to the Colombian government calling the mercury situation a 'serious and ongoing human rights crisis' and noting that, ten years on, compliance with T-622 had been insufficient, with organized crime smuggling mercury and gold and corruption blunting enforcement (Associated Press, 2025).
For the fishes, mining compounds the older pressures of the Chocó: deforestation for timber, coca, and cattle; sedimentation that smothers gravel beds and clouds the clear upland streams; and the legacy of armed conflict that has kept the region poorly surveyed. None of the roster cichlids carries a high extinction-risk rating today — Kronoheros umbrifer is Least Concern, Geophagus pellegrini merely Data Deficient — but those assessments rest on thin data from a region where 'fair' is FEOW's own grade for how well the fishes have been explored. A river just recognized as a legal person is still, in practice, being mined; the cichlids that sift its sand and hunt its shallows sit downstream of every dredge.
