Taxonomy & naming
Steindachner described the species in 1892 as Crossocheilus fasciatus, from Shanghai. The Catalog of Fishes notes that the original genus was Crossocheilus. It is now classed in Acrossocheilus, which gives the authority in parentheses. The Shanghai locality is probably a market or collection point rather than the natural habitat.
Morphology
A slender barb with a ventral mouth for grazing and dark vertical bars along the flank, as the name fasciatus (banded) says. FishBase gives a maximum of 7.5 in SL. Fin colour has not been described in the sources the atlas uses.
Habitat
It is a fish of rocky streams and rivers in eastern China. FishBase lists it as a freshwater, benthopelagic fish of temperate water in China. Specific river systems and water parameters have not been published beyond the type locality.
Feeding
Genus members graze algae and biofilm from stone and take small invertebrates. The diet of this species has not been described specifically.
Mating
Mating behaviour has not been described.
Breeding
Captive breeding has not been documented.
In the aquarium
A cool to moderate hillstream tank with strong flow, high oxygen, rocks and a tight lid suits it. Keep it in a group. Care notes are based on related species.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List category is Least Concern, assessed in 2023. Specific threats have not been described.
